KONFESI - to confess.

1. Publike deklari, kion oni intime kredas vera - to declare publically what one in private believes to be true.

Ĉiu homo havas rajton konfesi kian religion li volas - Every person has the right to confess (declare) what kind of religion he/she wants.
La konfesantoj de unu religio estas samreligianoj - The confessors of one religion are members of the same religion.

sam/religi/an/oj - '-an-' means a 'member'.

2. Malkaŝe diri, malgraŭ la eblaj kaŭzoj de sindeteno - To openly say [something], despite the possible reasons for remaining silent.

- "Sindeteno" literally means 'holding oneself back, abstaining'

Li konfesis sian amon al ŝi - He confessed his love to her.
Ekaŭdinte amkonfeson ŝi perdiĝis kaj ne sciis kion respondi - Having heard a confession of love, she lost herself (became all confused/flustered) and didn't know how to respond. (lit. 'what to respond')

3. Spontanee deklari ion malfavoran, malprofitan por si - To spontaneously declare something unfavourable, disadvantageous (lit. unprofitable) for yourself.

Another option for an 'disadvantageous' is 'malavantagxa'. But, perhaps 'malprofita' fits the above sentence better...

Mi konfesas mian eraron - I'm confessing my mistake.
Filo konfesis - patro forgesis - The son confessed - the father forgot.
Post konfeso venas forgeso - After a confession comes 'the act of forgetting' (can't quite think of the right word here!)
La infano malkonfesis sian kulpon - The child denied her guilt.

4. Religie deklari siajn pekojn, por akiri pardonon - To religiously declare ones sins in order to receive forgiveness.

Ĉu vi jam konfesis viajn pekojn? - Have you already confessed your sins?
La pastro sidas en konfesejo. Li konfesprenas (aŭskultas konfesojn) - The priest sits/is sitting in the confessional. He takes/is taking confessions (listens/is listening to confessions).

SUBTILA - subtle, fine.

1. Konsistanta el tre maldikaj kaj delikataj eretoj - Consisting of very thin and delicate particles.

La sablo estas subtila - The sand is fine.

2. Malfacile kaptebla, rimarkebla, komprenebla, pro ĝiaj delikataj nuancoj - Difficult to grasp (lit. 'catchable'), notice or understand due to its delicate/fine nuances.

Note: It's quite common to use words with the suffix '-ebl-'. Eg. Tiu libro estas facile komprenebla - That book is easy to understand (lit. 'easily understandable')

Lia klarigo estis vere subtila - His explanation was very subtle.

Ni dume forgesu pri la subtilaĵoj, ĉar restis multaj diskutindaj demandoj - We should meanwhile forget about the subtleties because many questions worthy of discussion remain (lit. 'have remained').

La poemo subtile kaj kortuŝe priskribas ĝin - The poem subtlely and touchingly (lit. 'heart-touchingly) describes it.
Ŝi ne konsentis okupiĝi pri financaj aferoj pro ilia subtileco - She did not agree to deal with (lit. occupy herself with) financial affairs due to their subtleties.

3. Kapabla fari aŭ rimarki delikatajn nuancojn, diferencojn - Capable of doing or noticing delicate nuances [or] diferences.

Mi devas konfesi, ke vi estas subtila observanto! - I must confess that you are a subtle observer.

LAVI - to wash

1. Purigi per akvo aŭ alia likvo - to clean with water or another liquid.

Lavu la manojn antaŭ ol manĝi - Wash your hands before eating.

Note: The use of 'la' here is quite common in Esperanto. The idea is that we can easily understand in the context that 'la' means 'viajn'. According to PMEG, this kind of thing usaully crops up when talking about body parts and relatives...

Mano manon lavas - A hand washes a hand. (?!)
La grajneto ellaviĝis el mia okulo pro mia plorado - The small grain was washed out of my eye due to my crying.
La patrino frotlavas la plankon - Mother is scrubbing (lit. washing with friction!) the floor.
Lavado de vestoj estas facila nuntempe, ĉar la tutan laboron faras lavmaŝinoj - Washing clothes is easy these days because the whole job is done by washing machines.
Ankaŭ la manĝilaron ne necesas lavi permane, ĉar ekzistas telerlaviloj - It's not necessary to constantly wash the cutlery either because there are dishwashers.

2. Tuŝi per sia akvo - To touch with its water.

La Balta maro lavas la bordon de nia lando - The Baltic sea washes the coast of our country. (sorry, I can't think of the right English word here!)
Maraj ondoj ĉirkaŭlavis la ŝipon - The sea waves washed around the ship.

3. Purigi - to clean.

Lavu de la malbono vian koron! Wash the evil away from your heart! (The literal translation of this is a bit different as in the Esperanto 'koron' is the object of 'lavu'. Something like "Wash your heart [so that you get rid] of the evil".

Fari al iu bonan lavon (severan riproĉon) - Give someone a good washing down (can you even say that in English?! Maybe 'a good dressing down'. Well, the meaning is made clear by 'severan riprocxon' = a severe reproach)

FLOKO - a flake.

Peceto, tufeto da maldensa kaj malpeza materio, kiu ŝvebas en aero, malrapide falante - A small piece or a little tuft of thin and light material, which floats in the air, falling slowly.

Flokoj de neĝo rapide degelis en miaj manoj - Flakes of snow quickly melted in my hands.
Matene ni manĝas avenflokojn kun jogurto - In the morning we eat oat flakes with yoghurt.
Flokaj nuboj ŝvebis en la ĉielo - Flakey clouds hovered/floated in the sky.
Oni uzas sapflokojn por lavado de vestoj - One uses soap flakes for washing clothes.

ASTRO - a heavenly/celestial body.

Natura ĉiela korpo, ekzemple, stelo, kometo, planedo - A natural body of the sky (ie. space), for example a star, a comet or a planet.

Li naskiĝis sub favora astro - He was born under a favourable celestial body (maybe we'd just say 'star' in English?)
Astra lumo heligis la tutan ĉielon - The celestial light lit (lit. 'made light') the whole sky.
Multaj homoj kredas je prognozoj de astrologoj - Many people believe in the predictions of astrologists.
Astrologio estas arto priskribi la karakteron de homo kaj doni informojn pri ties ebla estonteco laŭ la aranĝo de la astroj en la momento de ties naskiĝo - Astrology is the art of describing the character of a person and giving information about his/her possible future according to the alignment of the celestial bodies at the moment of his/her birth.

PMEG gives the following example of 'ties':

"La infano ludis kun sia pupo, kiam subite ties kapo frakasigxis" - The child was playing with its doll when suddenly its head got crushed/shattered.

- Ok, so in the English we can probably guess/hope that 'its head' refers to the head of the doll, but I suppose we'd have to change the sentence a bit to make it less ambiguous: The child was playing when suddenly the head of its doll got crushed.

But in Esperanto, the use of 'ties' makes it clear that the sentence is refering to the head of the doll. If you use 'gxia' instead of 'ties' then this would mean that it was the head of the child that met this terrible fate!

SONORI - to ring, chime, clang

1. Estigi sonon, daŭre sonantan post la ĉeso de ĝia kaŭzo (se paroli pri aĵoj) - to create a sound which lasts for some time after the cesation of its cause (if talking about things).

La glasoj sonoris dum la festo - The glasses chimed during the party.
La vitro dispeciĝis kun sonoro - The glass shattered with a chime

dis/pec/igx/is (lit. 'became into dispersed pieces'!)

Antaŭ la tagmanĝo oni povis aŭdi la sonorajn kuirilojn - Before dinner/lunch one could hear the clanging cooking tools/equipment.

- I put 'dinner' in there because where I'm from this still means the meal you have in the middle of the day! At school, we had 'dinner time'. And then 'tea' when arriving home at 5pm...

Sonorado al li venas, sed de kie - li ne komprenas - A clanging, chiming is coming to/reaching him, but he can't tell from where.

2. Indiki per sonorado (se paroli pri iloj) - To indicate [something] by means of ringing (if talking about implements)

La sonoriloj sonoris la komencon de la Kristnaska festo - The bells rang for the beginning of the Christmans celebration.
Sonorilo vokas al preĝejo kaj mem neniam eniras - A bell calls [people] to the church and never enters [the church] itself. (?!)
Alarmsonorilo avertis nin pri la danĝero - An alarm bell warned us about the danger.
La gongo eksonoris - The gong sounded.

3. Sonorigi (se paroli pri homoj) - To ring (if talking about people)

La knabino sonorigis per sonorileto - The girl made a ringing sound/rang with a little bell. (I changed 'sonoris' to 'sonorigis' in this sentence, as I think there was a typo there!)

Maybe it's worth contrasting the above sentence with: La knabino sonorigis la sonorileton = The girl rang the little bell.

Iu sonorigas ĉe nia pordo per pordosonorilo - Someone is ringing at our door with the doorbell. (the last part 'per pordosonorilo' is not necessary - You can simply say 'Iu sonorigas cxe la pordo')

FAJFI - to whistle

1. Produkti akutajn sonojn muzikajn, blovante tra rondigitaj lipoj kaj laŭ kavigita lango - To produce acute musical sounds [by] blowing through rounded lips along a curved tongue.

"Kavigi" literally means 'to make a cavity'

Li fajfis por sia hundo (vokante ĝin) - He whistled for his dog (calling it)
Post lia fajfo la hundo tuj alkuris al li - After his whistle the dog immediately ran to him.

2. Produkti analogajn sonojn per sia beko - To produce analogous sounds with a beak.

En la arbaro mi aŭdis, kiel bele fajfis iu birdo - In the forest I heard how a bird whistled beautifully.

3. Produkti analogajn sonojn per ilo - To produce analogous sounds with an instrument.

Dum la futbala maĉo juĝisto fajfis per sia fajfilo - During the football match the referee whistled with his whistle.

According to the Wells dictionary, it's better to write 'matcxo' with the 't'. This is because 'macxi' means 'to chew'. (macxgumo = chewing gum)

Danci laŭ ies fajfilo - To dance to someone's whistle.
Ekstere estis malvarme kaj aŭdeblis fajfado de la vento - Outside it was cold and the whistling of the wind could be heard.

4. Esprimi senton per fajfado - To express a feeling by whistling.

Mi fajfas pri tio (tute ne zorgas) - I don't care about that (lit. "I whistle about that")
Junuloj ekfajfis kiam ekvidis tiun belegan fraŭlinon - The young boys whistled when they saw that beautiful girl.

"Frauxlino" means an unmarried girl/woman. "Frauxlo" means a 'bachelor'.

La teatraĵo estis tre teda kaj pro tio oni ĝin moke prifajfis - The play was very boring/tedious and so they whistled at it mockingly/jeeringly.

FALDI - to fold.

Duoble aŭ pluroble fleksi tukon, paperon kaj ĝenerale ion ajn maldikan aŭ ion artikigitan, almetante unu sur alian la diversajn fleksitaĵojn - To bend [into two or several parts] some cloth, paper [or] generally something that is thin or joined (?) by placing the different parts on top of each other.

- 'Duoble' actually means 'doubly', and 'pluroble' means something like 'several times', but I wasn't really sure about the usage of these words in this sentence. I'm not entirely convinced that the Esperanto makes any sense! I presume that in this context they mean 'into two or more parts', because 'to double fold something' means that you fold it twice, which would be a strange definition of 'to fold' Maybe someone else can shed some light on the use of 'duoble' here?!

Oh and I don't really get the significance of 'artikigitan' - this seems rather a pointless word to throw in there! Still, it's useful to know the word 'artiko', which means a 'joint' between bones, for example. "Elartikigi la sxultron" = to dislocate your shoulder.

Ŝi faldis la leteron kaj enmetis ĝin en la koverton - She folded the letter and put it in an envelope.

Ĉiuj vestoj estas zorge falditaj en mia ŝranko - All the clothes are carefully folded in my cupboard.

Necesas gladi la jupon por forigi la faldojn - You have to iron the skirt to get rid of the creases (lit. 'folds')

Paperfaldado estas arto por elfari diversajn ludilojn - Origami (lit. "paper folding') is an art for making various toys.

La seĝo estas faldebla, do vi povas faldi ĝin kaj meti sub la liton - The seat is foldable/collapsable, so you can fold it and put it under the bed.

Ŝi aĉetis faldumitan jupon - She bought a pleated skirt.

La patro malfaldis la gazeton por tralegi ĝin - Father opened/unfolded the newspaper to read it.

Antaŭ ol lavi la telerojn mi refaldis la manikojn ĝis la kubutoj - Before washing the plates I rolled my sleeves up to my elbows again.

AVENTURO - adventure

1. Neatendita, neordinara okazaĵo en ies vivo - An unexpected, unusual event in someone's life.

Mi tre ŝatas legi librojn pri aventuroj - I really like reading books about adventures.
Tio estis ankoraŭ unu ama aventuro en ŝia vivo - That was another love adventure in her life.
Vi estas vera aventurulo, ĉar vi spertis multajn aventurojn - You are a real adventurer because you have experienced many adventures.

Note: Be careful about the word 'aventuristo' as this has a different meaning to 'aventurulo'. An 'aventuristo' is an adventurer in the sense of someone who is willing to take risks and use dishonest methods etc for personal gain.

2. Entrepreno plena de riskoj kaj hazardo - An undertaking full of risks and chance.

Note: "Hazardo" means chance. hazarde = by chance. The English word 'hazard' would be 'dangxero' or 'risko'...

Vi konstante serĉas aventurojn! You're constantly looking for adventures!
Li estas agema viro, eĉ iom aventurema - He is an active man, even a little adventurous.

Eblas nomi lin "aventuristo", ĉar li havas neniun difinitan profesion kaj trovas vivrimedojn nur el riskoplenaj aventuroj. - It's possible to call him an 'adventurer' because he doesn't have any definite profession and he finds a means of living only in risky (lit. 'risk full') adventures.

Ni naĝis kaj ŝi dronis. Tiun misaventuron mi memoros tutan mian vivon. - We were swimming and she drowned. I will remember that misadventure for the whole of my life.

KOMIKA - comic, comical

Ridiga, amuza - funny, amusing.

"rid/iga" = lit. 'it makes you laugh"

Tiu ĉi situacio estas komika - This situation is comical.
Li aspektas komike - He looks funny.
La komikeco de nia aventuro estas, ke ni sukcesis trompi tiujn stultulojn - The comedy of our adventure is that we managed to deceive those idiots.
Jim Carrey estas tre fama kaj bona komikisto - Jim Carrey is a very famous and good comedian.
Tiu knabo estas vera komikulo (nature komika) - That boy is a real comedian (naturally funny)
