Noun, effectively the same as English "respect".

Presumably comes from Latin "respect-", from "re-" (back, again) and "spectō", "to look back". Note the RE, not RI (e.g. rigardo). The RE might be intact simply because "respekto" matches its meaning more than "regardo" would if it was a word. From English Wikipedia.
