This is a hypothetical question:

If a country suddenly formed tomorrow in which one of the offical languages spoken became Esperanto, would you move there?

I'm curious to see what people think.

I will certainly move to this nice country with my horde and found a new political party which will agree to change some articles of the fundamento... rideto.gif

ceigered (顯示個人資料) 2010年7月23日上午11:14:05

Me and my volapükänik troops will then move in under the guise of trying to protect the fundamento from the frankuŝiaj hordes, before pulling a coup and taking the land for ourselves >ridego.gif

In sad and boring reality though, probably not, I can't imagine a country suddenly adopting a new language and culture out of the blue (unless it wasn't the primary official language of course). Sure, the Netherlands and Germany have probably more English speakers than England and Ireland, but that kind of thing is less of a culture shock than adapting a relatively new and alien language (EO's history beginning just one and a half centuries ago I imagine?).

Comeon Ceigered use your imagination...

Its hypothetical question - if some country came into existence the had Esperanto as one of the official languages would you move there. And anyways it’s not uncommon in history for countries to change languages within a short time frame, just look at Singapore. However back to the topic at hand this is all hypothetical.

Oh yeah sorry forgot to finish my answer! rido.gif I probably wouldn't depending on where the country is and its policies. Esperanto wouldn't be enough for my at least. I guess there are certain countries I'm definitely interested in due to their culture as a whole, but I must say I really like my own country. If it was here in Aus though I'd be pretty happy about something interesting happening for once, hopefully one of the major parties can promise teaching Esperanto for the election okulumo.gif

No chance of me moving to this hypothetical Duchy of Grand Fenwick; what I need to do is to get my own country to follow suit and adopt E as a third official language.

I might consider this new state as a regular holiday destination, however.

As says Ceigered, i think, culture, way of life, political and economic system would be more important than the language itself.

For instance, i can not imagine living, proudly as an esperantist, in a country occupied by volapukniki forces from an australian dictature and getting used to the training of kangaroos and saltwater crocodiles... rideto.gif

Esperanto country is an heresy! I would raise an army of finvenkistoj and prepare to war ridego.gif

Menefe Bal Püki Bal !

I wouldn't migrate there, but I'd go there on holiday.

The Prezidanto would be George W Bush rideto.gif

I would certainly be interested in going on holiday there, but whether I would move would depend on the reasons for emigration generally, such as career prospects and the standard of living.
