lertiĝu would be your only correct choice in this situation, because you're talking about intent to become skilful. That's wishes and intent, which is a clear indicator to the -u ending. -us is conditional, of course, and here, only the ekzercus part is conditional.

I would practice Esperanto [conditional] in order to [intention/goal] become skilful at it.

You would only use solely conditionals in a conditional-only situation. Se mi ekzercus min pri Esperanto, mi lertiĝus.

(note that you 'exercise yourself' in Esperanto; you don't 'exercise Esperanto', because if you look at the core definition of ekzerci, it's "lertigi per la praktiko"; we don't lertigi Esperanto, we lertigi ourselves, so of course we say "ekzerci sin/min/etc pri io")

ceigered:Would -us be better used if the overall mood is hypothetical (e.g. mi ekzercus mian Esperanton por ke mi lertiĝus pri ĝi)
I don't think so.

BTW there are some hits in Tekstaro for the -u form alongside -us, with this query string: \\b\\w{2,}us (\\w+,? ){0,3}por ke (\\w+ ){1,3}\\w+u\\b

IMO you should follow that usage.

"Por ke mi -us" isn't something I see very much. One exception though does seem to be "por ke mi povus", which in Google gets some 2.5 million hits, significantly more than "por ke mi povu", which does seem slightly strange to me. Personally I would just stick with povu every time, though there may well be something I'm missing.

Thank you Erinja and Tommjames for your explanations.

So, to edit the original phrase:

"Mi volas ekzerci min Esperante" = "Mi volas praktiki mian esperanton por ke mi lertiĝu pri ĝi"

Is that more correct?

While in some ways I feel sad that I have not learnt this before, I am excited to be learning about this por ke + -u full stop. There is always more to learn! ridulo.gif

You're nearly there; the name for the language, in the case of Esperanto has a capital letter by convention; Mi volas praktiki mian Esperanton. The word esperanto without the capital simply means 'someone who hopes'.
