Miland:The alparolato only knows it when it is pointed out to him.You seem to be confused about who is who here. If someone used "la" when asking the time, the alparolato is the person being asked not the person doing the asking. It is completely irrelevant whether the person asking the time knows what the time actually is. In exactly the same way you could ask "kiu estas la ĝusta vorto", the questioner doesn't know what the actual correct word is, but the alparolato does. Your argument makes no sense.
Miland:The expression 'point to' means 'indicate'. That is what la is doing. You would be indicating it. Not the exact hour, but the idea of the hour that is, right now. I refer to my example above, where a word is being pointed to, without knowing a thing about what the actual word is.
Miland:legitimate correctionNothing legitimate has been provided, and if it has it certainly isn't of the corrective kind. As far as I can see the approach taken by those in disagreement with Miĥil's viewpoint has been to throw out a lot of logical fallacies, true-but-irrelevant things and general nonsense, all of which have been fairly easily rebuffed. Nobody has yet demonstrated that there's a grammatical error here. Until you do, your argument remains "it's unpopular", which isn't even anything in dispute.
And I find your comments about Miĥil's "progress" to be laughable. He's spoken Esperanto way longer than you have, and to a better level. Be more careful about making such statements about people who may have been involved in the language for longer than you imagine.

tommjames:You seem to be confused about who is who here..Your argument makes no sense. There is no confusion in my mind. You have failed to understand what I said.
Miland:Be more careful about making such statements about people. That is exactly what you should be doing. You do not know what my qualifications are.
Let's look at your own, as you seem so sure that you have a right to correct me. Have you sucessfully taken the examinations of ILEI? Have you graduated from the IPKK? Have you taken the diploma of the EAB? If the answer in the majority is 'No' (and for all I know it may even be the case with all of them), it is not you who have the right on objective grounds to correct me; it is the other way round. So bear that in mind.

mihxil:Anyhow, I think your error is that you are insisting that 'la' is indicating that something is specified. There is no error. La does indeed indicate something specific, which the questioner is not in a position to do. But if you can't see that, there's no point in further discussion.

greenmanwitch:vi estas kristano.Ĉu vere?
The film you recmmended looks interesting, but the best Xmas film I have seen has been the 3-D version of The Polar Express, which can be seen in MIAX theatres.

Miland:So please clarify to me the example of tommjames or for example how it is possible to talk about 'la temperaturo' even if its value is not specified. Why do you think 'la' is called a 'difinilo' and not a 'specifilo'?mihxil:Anyhow, I think your error is that you are insisting that 'la' is indicating that something is specified. There is no error. La does indeed indicate something specific, which the questioner is not in a position to do. But if you can't see that, there's no point in further discussion.
Also you may say something about the Zamenhof examples I gave.

Miland:Have you sucessfully taken the examinations of ILEI? Have you graduated from the IPKK? Have you taken the diploma of the EAB?The answer to your questions is no, because I'm really not interested in what level my capability in the language may be deemed to be by authorities (which is also why I neglect to specify my lingvonivelo in my profile.. just doesn't seem important). I'm quite content to use the language each day with my friends and assist other people in their learning wherever possible.
Not that I really care for this kind of ad-hominem nonsense, but I was only responding to comments you made about someone who I know from personal experience to be a highly competent speaker. And, with regards to almost everything he's said in this thread, correct. Which stands in stark contrast to your delusional ideas about why "la" is supposedly an error in this matter.
Miland:You do not know what my qualifications are.Nor do I particularly care. I'm going solely on what I see here in the forum. Your credentials are of little relevance to your arguments, just as mine are to my arguments.
Anyway I'm done with this. There's only so much drivel I can put up with in any one day. Adios.

greenmanwitch:OK, it may be time for the teamo to give you a warning for using that kind of language. I'm staying.

Miland:It may be time for you to take a look at the 'appreciation' you're getting.greenmanwitch:OK, it may be time for the teamo to give you a warning for using that kind of language. I'm staying.
Find something else to do with your life, bro.

mihxil:Why do you think 'la' is called a 'difinilo' and not a 'specifilo'?I think I've explained my position enough. I don't think it's worthwhile to continue this debate.
