Did you hear Glenn Beck's ignorant comments about Esperanto?

Don't forget that the majority of people who post here probably don't have the First Amendment (the US Constitution actually only applies to Americans).

So, while it does apply to you, and it does apply to me, it doesn't really apply to qwertz any more than the various sections of the German Constitution* apply to us.

I think that Esperanto can only gain from this debacle, if handled right. If we present Esperanto as a "Revolutionary" Idea, we can attract people on all sides. Because really, everyone, of all political persuasions (in the US, that I know) claim persecution. If we present Esperanto as a workers movement, revolutionary idea, a "sticking it to the man" kind of idea, I think we could really gain a lot of new Esperantists. Especially in the young.

But, this is coming from the guy who makes TV for a living. In my experience, none of the stuff you see on TV is anyones actual opinion, it's how they make money, and really, that's what it's all about. At least that has been my experience.

The “we” refers to Americans. I used “we” assuming that anyone living with the 1st amendment would group themselves into the “we” and anyone not living so, would not.

Guess I should have been more specific.

It just struck me as such an odd thing to say in a conversation with a non-american, who may or may not have a clue what the First Amendment even is.

Almost as if, during a conversation with a Latvian about immigration, they said to you "That's why we have Article III, Section IX". Um, yeah, I guess...

We should look on the bright side.

1. A lot of people seem to hate Glenn Beck.
2. Glenn Beck appears to hate Esperanto.
3. People who hate Glenn Beck may become interested in Esperanto simply to piss Glenn Beck off.

Re Free speech and the first amendment, I support it and all, but I think the problem is that there's no recommendation next to the first amendment titled "Don't abuse it". There's nothing wrong with free speech, and there's nothing too wrong with being stupid, unless a smart person puts them together thinking there's no possible problem lango.gif

Actually, there are ways to allow free speech and not end up with the perfect storm that polarises people and empowers those with their heads stuck up their bums to overpower everyone else, but every western govt seems to be so set on their own direction that it feels too hard to reconcile them and make the perfect balance. That's some future utopia's job. (feel free to read utopia as its current meaning or as the meaning of its components)

@ RiotNrrd: Don't worry, we ALL know what the first amendment is. We probably won't ever forget it either, by means of having US television drill it into us, or by means of having us realise how convenient it would be at times to have it ourselves rido.gif. However, we don't normally know about other countries' legal systems either, unless they are nearby and we are close to them in multiple sense. E.g. Europe no doubt, but not so much an isolated nation like Australia.

I forgot about the legal system... Isn't Beck's comment about Esperanto technically slander? I mean, for Soros it's probably different due to various things, like him being a bik-bos-pela, but surely slander is chargeable in this case?

Or does it not work that way in the US? Or is this something to do with "False Light" (I've never heard of it up until now so forgive me if I'm getting things wrong here; I'm under the impression that slander requires a false statement, his statements about Esperanto may not be truly false, except for the bit about China).
