Unue militisto komandiĝis ke ili faras banalajn taskojn
Do I need ke in those sentences?
When should I use esti vs estas? Or inifnitive forms in general? I hardly ever use them...
Thanks

Your first sentence has a spelling error; it should be surprizis, not suprizis.
Your second sentence confuses me. -iĝ- verbs are intransitive. As written, the sentence reads as "Firstly, a soldier was commanded that they are doing banal tasks"
If you wanted to say "Firstly, a soldier commanded that they do banal tasks", it should be "Unue, militisto komandis ke ili faru banalajn taskojn"

erinja:If you wanted to say "Firstly, a soldier commanded that they do banal tasks", it should be "Unue, militisto komandis ke ili faru banalajn taskojn"The adjective banala is one of those falsaj amikoj. It doesn't mean 'banal.' It means 'trivial.'

I did actually wish to say:
Firstly a soldier (no gender) is commanded to do (small) trivial tasks.
(Typo is => as)
Maybe:
Unue militisto komandiĝis ke ili faru banalajn taskojn
?
Thanks, again.

yugary:I was originally going to ask "Are they not the same?", but it appears "banal" in English has some more meaning to it. But in this case there doesn't appear to be any false-friend problems since banal tasks have always been trivial tasks and vice-versa in my mind.erinja:If you wanted to say "Firstly, a soldier commanded that they do banal tasks", it should be "Unue, militisto komandis ke ili faru banalajn taskojn"The adjective banala is one of those falsaj amikoj. Genjix:Firstly a soldier (no gender) is commanded to do (small) trivial tasks. That should be Unue, soldato estas komandita fari bagatelajn taskojn. You could also say Unue, oni komandas soldaton fari bagatelajn taskojn.
Unue militisto komandiĝis ke ili faru banalajn taskojn ?

yugary:I don't see any problem at all with using "banala" here. The definition for banal has "devoid of freshness or originality; hackneyed; trite:", and the definition for banala has "Ordinare, ofte uzata de ĉiu ajn; seninteresa pro senoriginaleco". I think that's close enough not to be thought of as a false friend.erinja:If you wanted to say "Firstly, a soldier commanded that they do banal tasks", it should be "Unue, militisto komandis ke ili faru banalajn taskojn"The adjective banala is one of those falsaj amikoj. Also, the Dictionary of Esperanto Etymology by Andras Rajki has them as equivalents: "banala = Rus. бaнaльный, Lit. banalus, Pol. banalny, Ger. banal, Fra. banal, Ita. banale, Ang. banal"

trivial = stupid waste of time
Thanks others for your replies again.

The + fari bag... end parts are unfamiliar constructions to me... Guess I'll have to learn those sometime.
