erinja:I think it's a prestige issue. Attic Greek and Latin have more prestige than Esperanto.
I'm not sure about Attic Greek, but I believe J.K. Rowling learned Latin in school and wanted to promote classical languages. Too bad she never learned Esperanto!

If anyone has the unofficial translation of the book and wouldn't mind sending me a copy, please PM me!

I could not find any copies.

Then again, I don't know what to look for other than to Google "harry potter esperanta traduko"

If the translation team wished to do an 'illegal' translation, they could have published it ages ago, through a publishing house in a country that doesn't care very much about copyright laws. I'm sure we can all name several of these in our minds.

However they wanted to do it legally, and have jumped through all sorts of hoops to do it, and it doesn't seem to have come to anything, which is unfortunately. But since the emphasis is on doing it legally, I don't foresee that the translation team will be putting the book on bittorrent or Wikileaks anytime soon.

And if anyone here gets an under the table copy I encourage you also not to put it on bittorrent or Wikileaks. It would render meaningless the hours and hours of work that people have done to keep this thing legal and aboveboard.

Very true.

On the other hand, if someone wants to hazard their own translation they can do whatever they like with it - and be responsible for the consequences. It would be a gross injustice to these translators to misuse their work without permission.

The sweet irony of this situation is the author/publishing house decided they couldn't make enough money if they published it in Esperanto, and yet providing a fan translation would be illegal because it deprives said author/publishing house of income (although small).

Hopefully at some time they'll decide that at least an e-book format would be cheap enough to produce.

An ISBN costs about $100 if you are not a publisher. You can buy 10 for $100 if you already have a publishing company. So, for each version of a book you need $10.

Literally, if I owned the rights to Harry Potter and it was already translated for free, I could have my publisher set it out in ebook format today. If it sold 5 copies that would pay for the publishing cost. Amazon takes 40% of any ebook sold, so after the 6th copy sold in EO they would have made enough money.

The excuses are sad, pathetic lies...unless they feel the need to pay the translator.

The truth is JK Rowling doesn't like the idea of ebooks. She said that in an interview.

In general I think the Esperanto translation of HP1 should be published, for people who don't yet have access to it in languages in which they might be more fluent .. er, which ones? rido.gif

But on this point I sympathise with Rowling. To me a book printed on paper and bound between covers is a real book. An ebook to me is a book that hasn't yet been printed as a Real book.
