There is a thread in the French forum with interesting links on this topic.

The main thrust of the argument seems to be that as the current generation of translators and interpreters retires, it will be difficult to find their replacements, as the teaching of foreign languages occupies a diminishing space in the educational establishments of the English-speaking world.

An interesting example of the law of unintended consequences.

As the world gravitates to the adoption of English, the teaching of foreign languages to native speakers of English seems less important. But it makes it more pressing to have a substantial body of professional translators who are native speakers of English.
