Technically "utopia" means "not a place", so they can never exist rido.gif.

But I think part of the problem also is our opinion of what utopia is. We often interpret utopias as being like something from a Zamenhoffian speech, or something coming from Marx, but ultimately, like beauty, utopia is something everyone has their own opinion of.
Thus, utopia is achievable, if you think of it like something personal like nirvana - one person can find utopia, doesn't meant the rest will. So rather than seeking utopia and then falling into dispair about how impossible a task it is, I think we should all just try and do whatever we can to make life better, more enjoyable and worth living, and who knows, we might make a utopia and never realise it okulumo.gif

That's my thoughts on the subject anyway.

ceigered:
Unfortunately for micronations, most of their founders seem to have a fetish for not paying taxes to their original country, which is why most get shut down or are not well liked.
Hhm, do, but if I got it right, LETS-ers also can not pay taxation because they use an countertrade-"currency" which can not be converted into onsite state currency (i.e. EUR).

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LETS#LETS_and_taxation

"LETS is not a scheme for avoiding the payment of taxation, and generally groups encourage all members to personally undertake their liabilities to the state for all taxation, including income tax and goods and services tax. In a number of countries, various government taxation authorities have examined LETS along with other forms of counter trade, and made rulings concerning their use. Generally for personal arrangements, social arrangements, hobbies or pastimes, there are no taxation implications."

Let's try to keep the topic a bit closer to Esperanto, ok?

ki4jgt:My Esperanto isn't so good, so I can't translate that yet malgajo.gif
OK, here's a translation of the sixth para of that speech:

"We are not so naive as some people think us to be; we do not believe that a neutral language will make angels out of humans. We know very well that bad people will remain bad afterwards; but we believe that communication and acquaintance on the basis of a neutral language will drive away at least the great mass of those subhuman acts and crimes, which are caused not by an evil will, but simply personal ignorance and involuntary encroachment."

Yes, but as stated by what you quoted. Personal ignorance is a choice. Even though the knowledge will be MORE freely available (It will be able to be understood by more people b/c they understand Esperanto) but it still takes conscious will to learn. The same people who refuse to learn now, will be the same ones who refuse to learn then (Same Percentage) Furthermore, some of the most educated people in history have been the most brutal. It's not what you know which makes you understanding. It's how understanding you are, which allows you to know. But understanding things doesn't mean you'll treat them right. Dedication and expirience are what allow people to understand and have compassion for others.

As far as personal utopias, I agree. (But only if your personal Utopia does in no way infringe on the Utopia of others) The Utopia you have must still remain a Utopia while other people's (Personal) Utopias are falling apart all around you. Thanks for the translation. I'm about to read it.
