ekz. Mi alas kolegion.
I know iri lokon is a bit old-fashioned, but I need to cut syllables.
My issue with the verb al/i is that is doesn't really say what you're doing al something.
What d'you think?
[EDIT: How would you understand it in a context that lead you to understand that it meant i]iri[/i]?]

Personally, I think it works.
What else can you reasonably understand from it?
Why don't you say "mi aliras lokon" ?Mi aliras lokon & mi iras al loko both have the same number of syllables.
(EDIT: Granted, I can play around with where the stress falls, so that might fit, but I still want to know if using ali is defensible.)

If you say "alas", i think it's unambiguous, but i don't see how it would be shorter than "iras". I don't think the accusative with "iras" would be a problem, especially if you are considering something as unconventional as "alas" as an alternative.

...but it would be up to the esperantistaro to decide the meaning of "ali". Ali is ok but you would risk being misunderstood, depending on how you used the word.
I wouldn't use 'ali' in everyday speech (at least not until it was already in common use) but in a poem or song, sure, why not? As long as context makes the meaning clear.
And if you said "mi alas kolegion", I think most people would understand that you are going in the direction of a college. If you mean to say that you go to college, like you study at a university, then in that case you would say "Mi studas ĉe universitato". "I go to class" (as in attend a class) would be "Mi ĉeestas kurson". So "go" doesn't always translate into Esperanto as "iri", and the preposition used isn't always "al". "Go" has a lot of idiomatic English meanings that have widely varying translations in Esperanto, so you have to be careful with it.
