I would understand "se necese" to mean, if I see that it's raining or that rain is strongly forecast, I'll take it.

I found 550 Google hits for "kaze de bezono", in contexts that sound a lot like situations where we'd use "just in case".

'Por eventuala bezono' is perhaps too long and formal for everyday conversation.

I don't see why you couldn't just say 'kaze ke' or 'okaze ke' (not specifying in what case you might need the umbrella).

It can be a problem with Esperanto, finding instances in the Corpuses of everyday conversational turns of phrase. I found only a few instances of (o)kaze ke. Not enough translated everyday dialogue, I suppose.

yes, this is a good option. In many circumstances, it certainly works. In some cases, you could also perhaps say 'por certeco'

Here's an interesting example from the Fabeloj de Andersen, translated by Zamenhof:

“Mi povas demandi tion tiel same bone, kiel ĉion alian”, diris Johano; “eble tio estas ĝusta, kion vi sonĝis, ĉar mi firme konfidas, ke la bona Dio al mi helpos. Sed por ĉiu okazo mi volas diri al vi porĉiaman adiaŭ, ĉar se mi divenos malĝuste, mi vin plu neniam vidos.”

So, in this case, Zamenhof seems to indeed follow the Russian method of saying 'just in case'.

It kind of makes sense to say 'por ĉiu okazo' - after all, if you take your coat with you, then you are preparing for 'any possible related occurance, ie rain, wind or temperature'

It is true that I am using se as a short form, so that it is carrying a wider meaning than usual.

If se necese seems too ambiguous, another possibility may be mi kunportos ombrelon pro la eblo de pluvo, or por ebla pluvo.

A shorter form could be mi kunportos ombrelon por eblo, where the eblo in question need not be spelt out.

yes, possibly. Although it would also make sense to translate that as 'just in case'. But, I agree that the context does not make it absolutely clear.

What about the Zamenhof text?

The following quote is taken from Aleksander Korĵenkov's translation of 'Children' by Chekhov. Griĉjo shouts 'Partio!' in the sense that he has won the game:

— Partio! — Griĉjo subite krias kaj kaptas la monon de sur la telereto. — Mi finis la partion. Kontrolu, se vi deziras.
