Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has any old Esperanto books, magazines, or bulletins (i.e. Usona Esperantisto, Tejo) that you would be willing to share with me? I'm learning Esperanto, and I can't really afford to buy any books, or magazine subscriptions, but would be content with old magazines, or books that you don't want anymore.

Please let me know! Dankon!

-Sinanthiel

Luckily there are lots of resources out there for you. Try the Esperanto Bookshelf at Project Gutenberg for starters.

I had a quick look at the Esperanto translation of Alice in Wonderland at the link provided by Donnie, and the 1910 traslation seems admirable - in many respects superior to the 1996 translation.

Compare :

Ĉapitro I (1910)

Mirinda Falego

Alicio, jam longan tempon sidinte apud sia fratino sur la deklivo, tre enuiĝis pro senokupo. Unu, du foje ŝi prove rigardis en la libron kiun la fratino legas, sed povis vidi en ĝi nek desegnojn nek konversaciojn, kaj "por kio utilas libro," pensis ŝi, "enhavanta nek desegnojn nek konversaciojn?"

Ĉapitro I (1996)

Tra la Kuniklotruon

Alicon komencis multe tedi la sidado apud sia fratino sur la bordo de la rivereto, kaj la manko de io farinda; unu-du-foje ŝi rigardetis tranŝultre la libron kiun legas ŝia fratino, sed ĝi havis nek bildojn nek konversaciojn, "kaj kiel utilas libro, - pensis Alico, - sen bildoj aŭ konversacioj?"

Having made further detailed comparisons of the two translations, it is a mystery to me why this book was re-translated.

Far better would have been to edit the first translation, perhaps removing any anachronisms (very few), polishing the text here and there, and certainly not to discard elegant solutions already worked out.

Mirinda Falego is a far far better title for the first chapter than Tra la Kuniklotruon.

It is much more important to produce the charm of the original than to stick literally to the text - and to have something that reads naturally in Esperanto.

Well, my Esperanto hasn't evolved enough for me to really see a difference in the translations...

Since this site is free, are there any books in the beginner category? I don't think I would be able to understand much of those books if they are not easy to read.

Thank you for the info though! okulumo.gif

The Fundamenta Krestomatio by Dr. Z. is there and is fairly dry, but it starts out with basic constructions and gradually gets more complex. It's a bit like the more fun Gerda Malaperis! (which is not at gutenberg.org) in that way.

'La Princino sur la Pizo' and 'La Knabineto kun la Alumetoj' in the Fabeloj de Andersen were short and pretty simple.

Of course, a feeling for good style comes later Sinanthiel, but Alice in Wonderland was a book for children and I think falls naturally into your beginner category - particularly as you are likely to know the story of the original, which means that you will often be able to guess the meaning of an unknown word rather than have to look it up in the dictionary.

Luckily many of Esperanto's words are quickly recognizable and even beginners are often able to make sense of them. That being said, any time one endeavors to learn a new language one ought to have a dictionary close by okulumo.gif .

Right now Alice in wonderland is too hard for me.

I have the original story in english, but for some reason it's still too hard for me to really understand. It still hard for me to recognize two words put together, my vocabulary is very limited, but I practice everyday, so it's getting better.

I don't have a dictionary, and I can't afford one.
