Cool symbol! Even if it is somewhat far away from me. sal.gif

About the symbol: What is the English translation of "otako"? I only know testudo = turtle. What is the idea behind? Does the turtle paddling inside its own scarf or does it means something like the turtle version of Phoenix coming from the ash? Like the turtle gets awake, realized to be put away of land at midsea and tries to paddle back to land? Sounds like a real story of Esperantujo. okulumo.gif

Otako? Is that meant to be Otaku? demando.gif
(in which case, it's just otaku, conveniently)

I've never heard of it otherwise if it's meant to be something Australian, and ReVo doesn't have a definition.

Its Esperanto slang for otakuo which is in vikipedio, however everyone here just says otako, so its a localized Esperanto slang.

Haha, I like it. I do wonder what embarrassing situations could be created by calling yourself an otaku and then going to Japan and referring to yourself as that... Apparently there using otaku gives a much more derogatory image, and they'll probably think your house is literally full of anime memorabilia, when you might watch only one anime series rido.gif

Something I'll have to try out in the coming years as I get better with the language haha.

It seems to be an japanese root word. Does there excist an Esperanto-Japanese dictionary? Where did you find that word?

(Remembers me to the kateni discussion, which seems to be an japanese root word, too)

おたく / オタク

otaku (either way)

Originates from "お宅" (otaku again), which is a polite 2nd person pronoun that, after being used in some works, became used by fans, thus becoming a word for serious fans of a series/genre/etc, and then in Japanese for obsessive fans

I believe the Japanese equivalent of the English definition is "meinia", but can't verify it...

Yes well I learnt it in the groups here, its used like the english nerd.. sometimes geek. basically when someone says something nerdy or geeky we just says: Vi estas tiel otaka, or otherthings to that effect. I'm guessing it is the japanese root that's just changed in use.

We had our first meeting yesterday, seven uni students dropped in, all were undertaking a group project which had something to do with studying another culture, so they choose Esperanto. After three hours they could all speak about family members and describe who they hated, liked, thought was charming ktp, they successfully used the accusitive case, and even plurals. The beauty of it was, that they were all asian non-native English speakers! We also had another 18 year old fluent Esperanto friend of mine, a 12 year old russian boy - who dosn't speak Esperanto but fully understands it because his dad speaks it, plus a seven year old who ate all my chips malgajo.gif I think we might during our next meeting get atleast some of the group back as they actually seemed interested in Esperanto. I will soon upload some pictures to our offical facebook group.
