I think if Esperanto ever had a shot it would be in the non-English speaking countries... though I doubt it will ever become something more than a minor language - and for me that’s not a bad thing. I love the language and enjoy the people who learn it. I wish there were more like minds here in Sydney but that’s ok, I'll survive. To me Esperanto is going to be something like Hebrew was, something passed along the generations by those who have an affinity for it or by others who learnt it on the side (perhaps being interested in languages). There are already 3rd and 4th generation denaskuloj, and I myself will teach my kid Esperanto (This has even been discussed with my girlfriend, and my mother has agreed to start studying it to help me) Now for me, I feel a stronger heritage connection to Esperanto then I ever did to my german or irish ancestory, I have no care for those but for Esperanto... well thats another matter. But we all need to care about something!

One other thing to think about is that if EO were the official common language of BRICS, that reliable, strong, tough-sounding acronym would have to go, as it's based on the English names for those countries.

BBRĈS, or ĤBRHS anyone? okulumo.gif

Asocio de rapidkreskaj mondaj ekonomiegoj, might be better, as it makes 'ARME'. (Association of fast-growing gigantic world economies)

Which sounds like "Arme'" rido.gif

(Perhaps BBRĈS would sound sorta cool - "Boboroĉos" rido.gif)

such vocabulary would quickly develop once esperanto is used in these fields
Modern hebrew shows how it only takes a generation of use for all the visible "inadequacies" of the lexicon of a language to get fixed
How can it be developed in those fields when it is not used? If people started using it, all neccessary words would appear overnight
Yes agreed in principle. But how could that work in practice?

Unlike modern Herbrew, which is presumably used on a daily basis on television and in the press and by people of all different sorts of occupations, and as a first language, Esperanto is used only occasionally by a restricted community for a limted number of purposes and as a second language.

The only way that Esperanto could currently develop further in fields in which it is under-utilised, is by fiat, or by using the methods employed by Zamenhof and the early pioneers to stabilize the core language - the creation of authoritative word lists and the translation of model texts.

But for this development to happen the Esperantists must recognize that Esperanto is still a work in progress and rid themselves of fanciful notions about the imminent widespread adoption of Esperanto and illusions about the current maturity of the language (fit for all the purposes that language is employed).

Can anybody tell me where I would find serious comment on the Net in Esperanto of the issues in these current turbulent times in the world's economies?

You could set up threads in the Esperanto-language forum.

Where exactly are you from?
Bulgaria

If the Indians speak so beautifully why do all Brits mean about the pronunciation of the telephone operators for example?

This is because everybody is engaged to speak about Esperanto, not to speak in it, even its speakers.

Do people just get kicks out of repeating this?
