Hi everyone. When asked how I am in esperanto, I've been using the stock answer "mi estas bone", meaning "I am well", but someone corrected me today, saying I should use "mi fartas bone", is one more valid than the other to reply to "how are you?".

Thanks ridulo.gif

Yes, "mi fartas bone" or "mi bone fartas" are more valid. ^^

Thank you. I will use that from now on, then.

As a short answer to how you are getting on, 'bone' is fine.

But to say 'mi estas bone' looks like a grammatical error. On the other hand 'mi estas bona' could be misleading. Are you boasting?

There was a long discussion in the forums recently about the difference between 'mi sentas min bone' and 'mi sentas min bona'.

Kiel vi fartas is very ordinary Esperanto for 'How are you?' in the sense of how are you getting on/ are you in good health.

Thank you all for your help. I suppose it comes from translating directly from language to language. In English we can say "I am fine", but, obviously in Esperanto the verb for correct usage is slightly different.

Yes, you'd have to say 'Al mi estas bone'. Here's a quote from "Fabeloj de Andersen", translated by Zamenhof:
Hodiaŭ estas ĝusta printempa tago por poeto, la aero estas tiel eksterordinare klara, la nuboj tiel belaj, kaj ĉi tie en la verdaĵo estas tia aromo, al mi estas tiel bone kaj feliĉe, kiel mi jam de multe da jaroj min ne sentis!”
