I have problem in this verb formation. The problem is WHEN to use the mal + verb, for example, malaperis.
But mal is the opposite of adjective, malbela etc.
Thus, if the verb forming of the followings, what is right and wrong?
malvidas
maltrinkas
But most of the time, we see ne vidas, ne trinkas. It sounds odd to say malvidas vin.
Search for a while for the topic,but cannot find it. Hope it is not a double post. Please give good example and clear explanation.
Thanks.

darkweasel:You can use mal- with anything that has a logical opposite, whether it’s an adjective, verb, noun or even preposition (maltrans?).How about 'malviro' ? a female. But many say it is not possible.

EoMy:Theoretically it’s probably possible, but it is not useful so it is not used.darkweasel:You can use mal- with anything that has a logical opposite, whether it’s an adjective, verb, noun or even preposition (maltrans?).How about 'malviro' ? a female. But many say it is not possible.

EoMy:malvidasSelamat EoMy, I remember thinking about this very thing in the past.
maltrinkas
But most of the time, we see ne vidas, ne trinkas. It sounds odd to say malvidas vin.
It's a bit subtle but the difference is important.
Ne vidas = not see
Malvidas = opposite-of-see (unsee?)
Ne trikas = not drink
Maltrinkas= opposite-of-drink (puke?)
Hope that helps!

Not every combination of "Root + prefix or suffix" will make sense. Logic should guide your choices. You can make combinations that don't make good sense, or which have ambiguous meaning. These should be avoided.
mal- (opposite) has a meaning that is very distinct from ne (not).
"not red" has a very different meaning from "opposite of red" (and what does "opposite of red" even mean? this is why you don't expect to see a word like "malruĝa")
maltrinki (opposite of drink) is occasionally used by young people as a humorous way to say "urini" (to urinate)

And for malvidi:
What has been seen cannot be unseen.
Kio estas vidita, ne povas esti malvidita.
