As an exclamation at the end of a long or strange day, in English we might say, "What a day!"

"Kia tago!" seemed okay to me but I encountered some resistance to it when I used it. "Kian tagon!" was proposed instead.

I checked PIV and my first guess was correct, there are a couple of similar zamenhofisms as examples. However is this one of those things which has fallen out of use?

I think that "Kian tagon" is right, because its an abbreviation for "Kian tagon mi havis"....

Maybe "Kia tago" is an abbreviation for "Kia tago hodiaux estis", or any other similar sentence.

I would prefer "Kian tagon"!

I definitely agree with you. "Kia tago!" isn't the same kind of exclamation as "Bonan tagon!". "Bonan tagon!" is wishing somebody something but "Kia tago!" is making a general observation. One would also say "Vi idioto!", which is a general observation. I wouldn't say this is a rule, but it could be a quick way to decide whether to use accusative.
