The word 'drive' does not seem to have found a universally agreed equivalent in Esperanto, some using stiri, others veturi or konduki or aŭti. In this passage it is well established previously that Father Qixote is going by car so a simple Survoje li malĝoje pensis pri .. will do fine to render 'As he drove he thought sadly ..'

Again for second-hand it is not necessary to be too specific searching for an exact equivalent - jam malnova seems sufficient.

For 'the heat stood and quivered over the dry fields' (not incidentally the most idiomatic English) the important thing is, rather than to labour over the metaphor, to convey the idea that it was a hot, airless day when conditions produce a heat shimmer.

Perhaps something like La varmego tremetigis la aeron super la sekaj kampoj en la senventa tago, kaj mankis klimatizilo en lia malgranda Seat 600, jam malnova, kiam li aĉetis ĝin ok jarojn antaŭe.

To cope with English's past perfect don't hesitate to make use of -int to avoid the monotony of the simple past. Okazis tiel. Pastro Qixote, mendinte sian solecan tagmanĝon de sia mastrumantino, tiam ekiris ..

Thanks for the explanations, sudanglo! It makes me think of translation in a much different way (i.e. focusing on conveying the meaning foremost, instead of mimicing every nuance and idiom).

The phrase "It is located X kilometres away" gave me some pause when I was doing this exerpt. Is "Ĝi situas fore je X kilometroj" an acceptable translation? I don't recall seeing any explanation about this in my textbooks ("Ĝi situas X kilometrojn for" only seems to work when it comes before "de [location]" ).

In any case, I'm looking forward to the next translation. Thanks!

Nobody seems to have picked up on the fault in logic in the application of the analogy with canine lifespan.

Father Qixote bought the car 8 yrs ago when it was already second hand. Let's say the car was 2 yrs old at that time. Then it is now 10 years old. So multiplying by 7 it is now 70. This is not now early middle age.

Such mistakes are something that a translator has to deal with. In my view the translator has a duty to correct them with appropriate changes, rather than just to transcribe them into the translated version.

Looks as though the interest in the previous passages for translation is exhausted now. So here's another one to have a go at (taken from 'A Foreign Country' by Charles Cummings).

A member of the secret service (Kell) is interested in the movements of a couple staying in a hotel near the one he is staying at, and is giving instructions to a Tunisian taxi driver he has recruited. The phone refers to his mobile (cell phone in American) and the pool is a hotel swimming pool.

'Maybe they'll go out for dinner tonight,' Kell said. 'They left the pool twenty minutes ago. If you see them, be sure to call me. If my phone doesn't answer go through the hotel switchboard. I'm in room 1313. Follow them if they get into one of the other taxis. If you pick them up yourself, don't risk speaking to me in their presence. The woman speaks English, French and Arabic, all of them fluently. Send a text message with your destination.'

'Of course.'

My attempt. Lots of tricky (for me, a beginner) verb stuff here. I wasn't at all sure which ending to use half of the time. Looking forward to seeing what others chose.

The if clauses in the text are concerned with real possibilities, xdzt and rusto, so the appropriate tense ending is -os not -us. Also -os because the imagined event is in the future.

Se vi venos (if you come) se vi venus (if you were to come).

A neat way of expressing 'be sure to call me' is 'nepre telefonu'.

Se mia poŝtelefono ne respondos, tiam voku min per la konektotabulo de la hotelo. Mia ĉambro estas la 1313. Sekvu ilin, se ili enveturiĝos en unu el aliaj taksioj. Se ili entaksiiĝos en la via, atentu, ke vi ne parolu al mi antaŭ ili. La virino flue parolas la anglan, la francan kaj la arabian. Sendu skriban mesaĝeton, kiu indikas vian celon.'
