Interesting. That makes at least a little more sense.

I have some more exercises here if anyone would be willing to look over them. . .

These are just a direct translation from English to Esperanto:

1. Does your father collect postage stamps?
Ĉu via patro kolektas poŝtmarkon?

2. Did the son forget the milk?
Ĉu la filo forgesis la lakton?

3. Are the children eating sandwiches?
Ĉu la infanoj manĝas sandviĉojn?

4. Does a healthy boy drink milk?
Ĉu sana knabo trinkas lakton?

5. Will the father wash the small cups?
Ĉu la patro lavos la malgrandajn tasojn?

6. Did the new (female) teacher forget the book?
Ĉu la instruistino forgesis la libron?

7. Do they sell tea and coffee?
Ĉu ili vendas teon kaj kafon?

8. Does the sick daughter write badly?
Ĉu la malsana filino skribas malbone?

9. Are they good friends?
Ĉu ili estas bonaj amikoj?

10. Does your brother sell books and newspapers?
Ĉu via frato vendas librojn kaj ĵurnalojn?

And here I'm supposed to answer the question with a full sentence, using either "jes" or "ne":

1. Ĉu la lakto estas varma?
Jes, la lakto estas varma.

2. Ĉu vi gustumis la kukon?
Ne, mi ne gustumis la kukon.

3. Ĉu lia edzino estas la patrino de via amiko?
Jes, lia edzino estas la patrino de mia amiko.

4. Ĉu majo estas la dua monato de la jaro?
Ne, majo estas la kvina monato de la jaro.

5. Ĉu vi vidis la novan teatraĵon?
Jes, mi vidis la novan teatraĵon.

You made mistakes in numbers 1 and 6 of your first set. See if you can find the mistakes and correct them.

#6 should be: Ĉu la nova instruistino forgesis la libron?

I'm not seeing an error in #1, though. It looks correct to me. . .?

Gosudar (Mostra il profilo) 10 agosto 2012 01:33:24

SPX: It looks correct to me. . .?
It looked correct to me too until I looked more carefully. At this stage most mistakes in Esperanto aren't "real" mistakes; they are simply sloppiness.

How about this. . .

Ĉu via patro kolektas poŝtmarkojn?

That got it?

Gosudar (Mostra il profilo) 10 agosto 2012 02:13:06

SPX:That got it?
Got it.

These exercises seemed to have left out one of the most essential phrases of any beginners' course.

Where is la plume de ma tante?

However Will the father wash the small cups comes close to maintaining the noble tradition, with a probability of one in 14 million of ever being encountered in real life.

It's probably much the same for most foreign language courses. After ploughing through all those nonsensical sentences you eventually arrive at those 'colloquial Spanish/French/German' (or whatever) books and finally encounter all the stuff you think they ought to have been teaching you all along, the way people actually speak. On the other hand it's probably the case that if a person doesn't go through all those seemingly foolish sentences at the beginning they just won't have the tools to make it to the colloquial stage.
