I had the same feeling about 'havas sencon' when I first read it; I thought perhaps the idiom 'makes sense' had a different nuance in the various kinds of English, and we've seen some examples of those in this thread. B: Tio havas sencon.

A: Eble ĉar mi furzis gambolevante dum la intervjuo.
B: Nu, tio havas sencon.

Esperanto has many words whose meaning overlaps with other words. If you applied "Foriĝu malutilaj vortoj!" consistently you'd never learn the language.

If you applied "Foriĝu malutilaj vortoj!" consistently you'd never learn the language.No, we should not remove synonymes consistently, but when there are many of them and some of them cause problems, we could avoid those ones. It might be that the idiom now under discussion is so much of an problem to speakers unfamiliar with English, that it adds to their difficulty to learn the language. I think we should listen attentively to criticism from Japan, China and other places which did not contribute to the original formation of Esperanto.

I have found it very useless to try translate too much from one language into the next. Get into Esperantio and swim with the fish! Don't try to squeeze too much from your L1 (first language) into your L2 (second language). The audience is different. "It makes sense" is a little "know-it-all" in English at times and (that is an attitude that many native English speakers have). At other times it is just a sort of "tag" - an icebreaker for a sentence (It makes sense to shop at X cause the prices there are better = Logically I shop at X ...)
