What is the difference between:

probable
verŝajne

If it has some relation to the probability theory, use probable.
In other casey they mean about the same.

probable - it is likely
verŝajne - it seems to be the case

I wouldn't be adamant about it, but maybe 'probable' is more of a guess, more speculative and 'verŝajne' more it seems reasonable to suppose, or circumstances would suggest.

I never use "probable".

Once upon a time ridulo.gif I sometimes got irritated at what I (inappropriately) called "conglomerated" words in the Esperanto vocabulary. Sometimes they seemed to be puzzles to be decrypted rather than aids to communication. Yes, I personally have never had any opportunity to try actually to speak and hear Esperanto as a person to person language, so that my experience has been entirely with it as a written code. (Perhaps in October I will have an opportunity.)

Nevertheless, I have changed my mind somewhat over the years. As a written language, within E-o it seems to me to be a reasonable matter to construct words out of fewer roots and not to multiply roots beyond genuine need. In the instance of this thread, I would surmise that there is no real need for probable as a "foreign" word when verŝajne, composed of two simpler roots, will do.

I think eble is also good.

By the way, what is the nuance in english between maybe and perhaps? I read that perhaps is more formal, but are they synonymous?

Thank you.

I think they are the same. I think they are used in the same way as well. I don't make a distinction between them. But, as you said, "perhaps" is more formal and upper class

Thank you for your answer.

Happily, there are not such "upper class" words in Esperanto!

Setting aside the question of whether 'perhaps' is more formal (or 'upper class' ) than 'maybe', I wonder why you should think it undesirable that there should be differences in register in Esperanto.

As regards the difference between probable and verŝajne, doesn't the former more readily admit of degree.

Something can be more or less likely - pli aŭ malpli probable.

Isn't it a bit illogical to say that something is pli vera or malpli vera?

Usages in Tekstaro:
(mal)pli ver(a/e) - 20
(mal)pli verŝajn(a/e/igas) - 20
(mal)pli probabl(e/as) - 4
pli ebl(/a/e/igas) - 9
