"fiat money" is ĝirmono, but I don't know what single "fiat", as I hear this word/concept for the first time.

You could just say paper money (papera mono), but if you want a technical-sounding translation then judging by equivalents in other languages fiducia mono would be acceptable under rule 15 (international words).

The essence of fiat money is that it has little intrinsic value unlike gold or silver coinage, and can be freely created by decree.

Anything can be money provided the community accepts it as such and there are some curious historical examples, but nowadays it is just bank-notes or an entry in a computer that can be translated into conventional money.

Since it just requires trust you might say fido-mono; closer to the etymology would be dekreta mono. Fiat is Latin for let it be done, or something like that.

I would plump for 'fiducia mono'.

mono sen apriora valoro???

"Money without intrinsic value" 'cause that's really what fiat means today when we talk about money.

The Plena Ilustrita Vortaro gives fidata mono which is literally "trusted money". The Esperanto Wikipedia also uses that term. I think it's a bad choice. The real essence of "fiat currency" is that it's a system of objects, with relative worths, declared to be money by a government; the market value of the components can be more than nothing, but it should be lower than the declared value. There is also a major difference between "market value" and "intrinsic value"; in fact these are both ill-defined concepts.

My first preference would be dekreta mono, followed by laŭleĝa mono. The neologism fiducia is okay; fiata is acceptable but may be misinterpreted as "shamed money".
