Mike Lacey, the vet, was on his way to Crocket's farm just after nine on Tuesday morning. He was keeping an eye on the river to his left, noting how debris borne on the force of the spate swirled past.

He hoped he was not going to be called upon to rescue trapped livestock. But it wasn't an animal he spotted. He braked, scrabbled for the binoculars he kept in the car, jumped out of his mud-splattered 4 x 4 and went to investigate.

His eyes had not deceived him. Close up scrutiny through the binoculars confirmed that the object, despite being largely submerged, was human in form.

Blimey, I wouldn't even expect to write that in English. It's a bit awkward for a translation.

That entry is rather annoying (and wrong, at least in the second part). Btw, the WHO reported last year that British children and young adults had the fewest tooth cavities and the best overall teeth of the world's largest economies. Probably because the charging caps bring less fear of bankruptcy when seeking dental care. So that's a thumb in the eye of the people who keep harping on about the untruth that British people have bad teeth.

Cosmetic dentistry to hide soda-pop teeth is not 'good teeth'.

Oh, yes...Esperanto! (so that no one moans about off-topic posts).

Vestitor, perhaps, when translating Shakespeare, copying the style is important, but this text is from an entertainment rather than high literature, and the most important thing is readability.

With such texts, it seems to me to be perfectly legitimate, to 'improve' the text if certain passages seem clumsy or are unclear.

Yes, perhaps the way that 'spate' is used in the text is uncommon, and the idea of using it for the state of a rain-swollen river that has burst its banks may be limited to British English - internet dictionary searches suggest this. However Esperanto can offer ordinary language possibilities.

Google translate is a little weird as regards the translation of four by four. (I started with the French expression 'quatre-quatre'.)

A number of languages give the equivalent of four by four, but for others the translation is 3:56, eg for Spanish 'tres y cincuenta y seis'
