You know what? I think an Esperanto Apples to Apples game would just be amazing.

Just thought I would share that because I love that game oh-so-much.

What are your thoughts?

Being a word game, it might well suit Esperantists very well if an Esperanto version existed. It appears quite portable as well.

We did a translation of this game at ARE (Aŭtuna Renkontiĝo Esperantista) two years ago. We had an English version of the game, and we simply divided up the cards and wrote translations on red and green colored index cards. We had a good time playing it, and we added in a few more "Esperanto-specific" cards as well. I don't know what happened to the translation cards, presumably the person who brought the game in still has them.

There definitely isn't a commercial version, though there is nothing stopping anyone from posting online a list of Esperanto word translations, to allow people to print them out onto their own cards.

Apples to Apples is such a fun game. The best part is the lobbying while the judging player is trying to make up his mind, and people are trying to come up with a "convincing" argument that Grandma's House is more Fragrant than a Homeless Shelter, or that a Redwood Forest is more Brilliant than Lightning.

It would also be cool to see an Esperanto version of other word games like Last Word or Scattergories, but they would be harder to bootleg without the special timer thingys that come with those games.

Sounds like a great game. I haven't come across it before, but I notice there's a UK version available. I'll put it on my wishlist.

And I reckon an Eo version would be a fun learning aid.

Once Upon a Time is another card language game that is good for language practice. Much less text on the cards too, which makes it perhaps more practical to play in Esperanto with an English set!

Of course any boardgame can be played in Esperanto, even if the game is not about language. ridulo.gif

Should the synonyms listed on the green cards be translated as well, as they sometimes rely on multiple meanings that the Esperanto word might not have or are redundant because the same word would have to be used?

Also, should the people on the red cards be changed, as at least one translation of Apples to Apples did, and if so who to?

The synonyms on the green cards should definitely not be translated as is. In English, "brilliant" can mean either "exceptionally smart" or "brightly shining", and the synonyms on the green card Brilliant of course reflect that (I don't recall exactly what the synonyms are on that card). These kinds of ambiguities don't always carry over into Esperanto though -- I'm not aware of anyone ever using the equivalent Esperanto word brila to mean "smart".

I would leave off the synonyms altogether, or maybe instead of synonyms, put the translation of the word in the native language of the people playing (if the game is being used as a vocab-building exercise).

As for people on the red cards, I would leave out people that would give an unfair advantage to players with knowledge of U.S. pop culture (I'm thinking of, for example, cards like Andy Warhol or Clark Gable). IMO, the game should be as culturally neutral as possible.

Also, if anyone is seriously considering making and posting a card list, I'd suggest renaming and re-theming the game to avoid copyright issues.
