The verb atendi, to wait, a transitive verb with a direct object, e.g. Atendu min!, Wait for me!
The ending -ant shows that is a participle, more precisely active (the letter n), present tense (a) participle.
Since the whole word ends in -e, the word is an adverb. Adverbial participles works like clause-equivalents, i.e. they replace a sub-clause. In essence they show some additional action that took/takes/will take place besides the action of the main clause. You are correct. However, in Spanish we say "esperándote", exactly the same way as in Italian. Your wording "esperando por ti" means something like "atendante anstataŭ vi / aspettando al tuo posto / aspettando invece di te". That is, somebody else is doing the waiting for you. A more direct translation into French might be "en t'attendant".
