I've found Erinja's messages always interesting and informative. And I even haven't noticed they were long - not to speak of being too long! Too long may be messages that just say nothing - no matter how many words do they contain...
Amike,
Harri.

Please, Erinja, don't do that (type less). I enjoy your posts very much.

Regards,

Daniel

Rogir:
And we'll see if you're still reading, you mentioned that you tend to skim over large blocks of text and not read the content carefully, so I know I'm in trouble here lango.gif
Then maybe you should start typing less.

This is a very good piece of advice. It reminds me of something said by Martin Luther, translator of the Bible into German:

"Whoever would speak German must not use Hebrew style. Rather he must see to it-once he understands the Hebrew author-that he concentrates on the sense of the text, asking himself, ‘Pray tell, what do the Germans say in such a situation?’ Once he has the German words to serve the purpose, let him drop the Hebrew words and express the meaning freely in the best German he knows."

Regards,

Daniel

erinja:Right.

The best rule of thumb is, focus on the meaning, not the words. The words will trip you up and possibly have you come up with something nonsensical. If you focus on the meaning only, you will get your point across even if you make a mess of the grammar.

Mein Gott, er ist richtig!
Danke für diese Wörte!

Through similarity to Esperanto and English I guess the following partial translation:

My God, -----------!
Thanks for these words!

Would you please fill in the blanks?

Thanks.

Daniel

There is a multilingual dictionary on the right panel on this very web site, and it is free to be consulted ridulo.gif

richtig
1) Adj ĝusta; ekzakta; fehlerfrei senerara; wahr vera; passend konvena; typisch tipa; 2) Adv ĝuste; ekzakte; tatsächlich fakte

Thanks! I had noticed the link to "vortaro" but I thought it was only for Esperanto (as you see, I haven't yet used it).

I have to agree with you, danielcg. If someone wants to write German on the 'In English' forum, they should provide a translation so us non-German speakers can understand what the heck they are talking about.

And erinja, I usually read with a considerable amount of interest anything you write (political opinions excluded, of course ridego.gif ). I've learned a lot about Esperanto from you. So keep on doing what you have been doing. You do not write too much and your opinions usually make a lot of sense.

Another topic: I'm still having problems with quoting other writers. Someone told me earlier to click on 'reply' but that doesn't work. How do I quote the "Then maybe you should start typing less" remark that someone made earlier?

Sorry, I was joking around with the German and was thoughtless enough to leave it without translation!

My God! He is right!
Thanks for these words!

You did very well danielcg ha ha, sorry I forgot the translation.

@ jawq81: That's what Google Translate's for ha ha.
But on a more serious note, the citations/quotes can be made by a button above the text box you write it - the button should have a little speach bubble with multiple lines in it. It is also next to the 'Sx --> s^' button.

(and on a historical note, on the subject of 'richtig', if this word was converted to English standards it would be 'righty' but of course you drop the 'y' in English so it equals 'right', in case any other crazy Australian tries to write in German in the 'In English' forum ha ha)

Thanks ceigered for the explanation but that is what seems to be giving me problems. When I click on the "New Post" at the bottom of the page, I arrive at the "add a message" box. There are nine "bubble box" buttons above this and the second from the right is the "quote text" button that you are referring to. Clicking this brings up a Enter the text,
xxx
and a line beneath it. It doesn't seem to allow you to cut and paste. How then does one enter a sentence, a paragraph, or a several paragraph quote? Thanks and sorry if this function is 'blowing my mind'.
