p.s. If you're bent out of shape, don't get on my case. ========================
Wow.

Mi kredis ke li estas timema. Nun ĉiuj scias ke li estas senkuraĝa. Mi raviĝas.

Se vi humore tordiĝas, ne celu viajn kritikojn al mi.

Or something!

What are the rules about pluralising "ĉiu"? "Everyone" isn't a plural in English....

"Ĉiu" means every individual. "Ĉiuj" means everyone, taken as a group.

More precisely, I usually translate "ĉiu" as "each" and "ĉiuj" as "all" or "everyone". So "ĉiu" = every individual; "ĉiuj" = all individuals.

It seems like a weird distinction to make at first, but once you get used to it, you find that people really do use ĉiu and ĉiuj differently.

Forgive me, but this sounds like an irregularity. As far as I understand a group is referred to as itself, in the singular, so it doesn't make sense that cxiuj = everyone, taken as a group.

Equally, cxiu meaning every individual, is referring to a bunch of individuals, so if this word has a plural, it should be this case, not the reverse.

I think I am going to have to remember this as an exception malgajo.gif

Thanks for your time in explaining anyway, Erinja.

Keep in mind that grammatically "ĉiu" and "ĉiuj" are adjectives. Like other adjectives, they may be used alone, when the noun is understood (defaults to people). In that sense, they work exactly the same as English "each" and "all".

If I were teaching syllogisms in Esperanto (and that would be a hoot), I could say, "Ĉiuj hundoj estas bestoj" or "Ĉiu hundo estas besto." The two sentences have the same truth conditions, but the second one emphasizes the individuality of the dogs a bit more. Thus, if we were talking about dogs, so the subject is understood, I might say "Ĉiu estas besto" or "Ĉiuj estas bestoj", depending on the emphasis I'm trying for.

OK. Thanks Todd. I get it now.
