Saluton

I was trying to translate a joke that came up on the main page but the word Artifikisto is not in the Lernu dictionary, nor in any other that I can find via google. Can anyone help please. To put it in context the joke is:

Artifikisto vokis knabon al scenejo kaj plenvoĉe demandas lin:
- Knabo, ĉu vi povas certigi, ke vidas min unuan fojon?
- Jes, paĉjo.

If there is a better dictionary on the net that has it I would love to know where.

Thanks
Guy

You can find artifiko in the Reta Vortaro. In Butler's dictionary (and in Wells), artifiko means 'trick'.

The suffix isto just means 'professional'. The context of the joke suggests a stage conjuror.

There seem to be a few typos in the joke. One possible minimal revision might be:

Artifikisto vokis knabon al scenejo kaj plenvoĉe demandis lin:
- Knabo, ĉu vi povas certigi min, ke oni vidas min unuan fojon?
- Jes, paĉjo.

There's a few second hand copies of Wells available on the internet.

Of course it could also mean someone who fucks 'artiojn' for a living. But I guess that's not what's meant, right?

In that one sentence, there are two nouns that are labeled as objects. That confused me a bit. It should say "min unuafoje".

A magician or conjuror. I get it now. His son has got a long way to go before he takes up the family business. Laff... senkulpa.gif

Hi
Thanks! Artifiko is actually in the Lernu dictionary as well. I guess the trick is being able to subtract the suffix to get the root.....

Well, I didn't put 'fiki' in the thread title, did I?

Why would you introduce "oni"? The point of the question is "Can you assure me, that YOU (the boy) are seeing me for the first time" (not "that one/someone/they is seeing me for the first time" as your use of "oni" implies).

I.e. the joke is that the magician wants to make it seem the boy is just a random stranger from the audience, not a collaborator who is in on the trick, but the boy ruins the effect by making it clear that he knows the magician (by calling him "father").

I interpreted the joke differently from you, seeing it as a play on 'unua'. That is, the father calls his son to the stage before the performance and seeks assurance that 'they' (oni) are seeing this particular trick for the first time. The son replies 'Jes', because he interprets 'unua' to mean that they will not be back again.

But your interpretation, in view of the word plenvoĉe now seems more plausible.

"Artifikisto" is not in the PIV, and one cant see why not. We can do with "iluziisto" and "prestidigitisto", but for those there are equivalents in most languages and are not quite the same in semantic scope. "Mago" doesnt apply. Annoying.
