Accusative when omitting the subject and verb.

Hey All,

Just wondering if the object should still be placed in the accusative case when the subject and verb are omitted? I'm guessing that for reasons similar to the "Mi deziras bonan nokton al vi" argument it should. As that's clear as mud I'll pop in an example!

If I'd like to simply state that I ate two cakes this morning and not explicitly say "I ate two cakes this morning" I would write:

"du kukojn ĉi-matene" and not "du kukoj ĉi-matene" as I'm actually shortening "Mi manĝis du kukojn ĉi-matene".

Mi ne parolas la anglan. Mi respondas en Esperanto :

Nominativo kaj akuzativo ne tradukas saman aferon. Ekz.:

Bona laboro ! = Via laboro estas bona ! (La laboro estas farita)
Bonan laboron ! = Faru bonan laboron ! (La laboro estas farota)

Your situation:

Kion vi manĝis? -- Du kukojn ĉi-matene.

A slightly different one:

Kio estis sur la tablo? -- Du kukoj ĉi-matene.

Yes. If someone asked yoo, "What did you eat for breakfast?" you would answer, "Du kuketojn" (or whatever, with the accusative).

You want to have breakast and call a waiter:
Kelnero, du kukojn, bonvolu!
(=Kelnero, bonvolu alporti du kukojn!)
(Waiter, two cakes, please!)
(Waiter, bring two cakes, please!):
You eat them, and the waiter brings a bill:
2 kukoj po $0.10, $0.20 (dudek cendoj) entute.
(2 cakes at $0.10, total $0.20 (twenty cents).)
This is not a shorten phrase - name of goods and money in price lists and bills are in nominative.

Thanks to everyone for all your help, your answers were just perfect and really helped clear up the proper usage in my mind.

Dankon ĉiuj por viaj asistadoj, viaj respondoj estis perfektaj kaj nun mi scias kiam mi devas uzi la akuziviton.
