Why is jen not a verb?

I've always thought jen was a weird word, and I'm wondering if anyone can explain to me why it's not a verb. It seems like it would make more sense to have a verb like jeni for "to behold". Am I understanding it's meaning wrong?

Jen is an interjection/adverb so its meaning is more of an expression than an action. "To behold" means more or less to look at something, so I'd translate that to rigardi or otherwise according to the context. But jen is just the word you use to announce or draw attention to the thing you want somebody to look at, so it's not really connected to "beholding" something.

Jeni means something like "to be in the following way". For example you might say La respondo jenas: or Mia retpoŝtadreso jenas: etc.

Yes. Or the Hebrew Hinneh, the biblical interjection 'Behold'. Sometimes you may see jene meaning 'here' or 'below' as part of a document.

I guess that one of many examples that the adjective given by you could be 'Look at this here person over here' in speech? (pardon the bad English translation, not sure how to translate it back properly)

And tommjames, does that mean jeni could be used to introduce yourself? e.g. "Hej mi jenas Kristiano/Mi nomjenas Kristiano/Mi jennomas Kristiano"? (my name being Christian)

Seems like a slightly convoluted way of doing things. Typically following jenas I would expect to see a separate description or name of the subject, perhaps indicted by a colon or commencement of a new sentence. An English translation of your sentence might look something like Hi, my name is as follows: Kristiano, probably not suited to most contexts.

Jeni shows up often in practice and has a well established meaning so I don't see any reason at all to consider it confusing.
