I've got a few friends who are blind, and do not have computers. They would like to learn Esperanto.
Would anyone be interested in helping me read into mp3, courses and information pages from the English Lernu? My idea is, to collect courses, burn them to audio CD, and send them to those who are interested. I usually meet people at conferences for the blind, or at local meetings. I've checked the American National Library Service, and there is only ONE braille book available in the country.

Here's my amateurish attempt at reading the 'About Esperanto' section in the 'Introduction' section [http://en.lernu.net/enkonduko/pri_esperanto/index....]

-AVERTI-Mi estas preskaux-blindulo, kaj komencanto. Sed mi pensas, ke estas gravan ideon.

So, good idea? Bad idea?

Cheers,

Well, you can download the mp3 version of "Mi estas komencanto" course from Lernu!.
That doesn't mean that your idea seems bad to me! I also thought of recording some Esperanto audiobooks when my skills get better.

You could use Text-2-Speech Software and a polish TTS voice. It sounds nearly like Esperanto. Furthermore the newest pdf reader software has an "read aloud" feature. In my opinion taking energy on developing a proper Esperanto text-2-speech software makes more sense than recording (mp3) audio books etc.

I've went down that alley. I have 3 synthesizers: Espeak (NVDA), Nextup (TextAloud), and Eloquence (JAWS for Windows). They're not bad per se, but they need some work on stressing Esperanto syllables and hearing multiple-affixed words.

This got me thinking. I've found a few books online in audio, to help teach Esperanto. Does anyone know if the "10 lesson postal course" is available in audio?

Mi pensis, ke mi trovis voĉon Esperanto Lerno-librojn.

Hope you don't mind me correcting you're esperanto! lango.gif That's how I'd right it, might not be entirely correct though (pensigis was made up on the spot lango.gif). Also use 'scias' here because 'scii' means 'to know (facts, statements etc)' where as 'koni' means 'to know of someone or something, to be acquainted with'. "Iu konas la "10-lecionan poŝtan kurson" is like saying "anyone heard of the 10 lesson post course?" rideto.gif.

As for the actual question, not a clue lango.gif

Haha that's brilliant Rogir, thanks for that. This is when we know I've been chatting on online video games too much! lango.gif

A certified esperanto teacher told me that the polish voice(s) of the ivona tts software goes nearly esperanto text-2-speech. Due to the polish-voice-"intention" the polish tts voice can not speak/transform the ŝ,ĝ,ĥ etc. properly and the tts voice also add a "half german j to the end of some consonant". Don't ask me excactly what it is about but a german "j" should be a english "y" I assume.

Stab in the dark here, but it might be that there is a palatalization in progress. From the page I just linked:

"indicated by a superscript 'j', as [tʲ] for a palatalized [t]"
