Mi samopinias! PMEG looks like it's gone backwards in time, except for those nice looking boxes with the examples in'em. (links also have nice hover effects, and the highlight colour, at least on Safari, is forced to blue as opposed to whatever colour you normally would have. If only everything else wasn't changed)
I've started a thread to discuss this further in the Esperanto section: Nova aspekto de PMEG

As an alternative to 'Mi faris kion mi devis' you could also say with a slightly different nuance 'Mi faris kio farendis/Mi faris kio estis farenda'.

Another shade of meaning would be conveyed by 'Mi faris tion, kio estis necesa'.

'Devi' is a broad church covering duty, obligation, necessity, compulsion.

PMEG says that the passive participle of devi is practicaly not used. But in this context "la devata" is not used as participle but as an adjective meaning "this what is to be done". So I think that the sentence is quite correct, though it may seem unusual.

Would this be acceptable?

Mi faris tion, kio necesis al mi.
