Benson gives hejmbieno for homestead. Seems as good as any, to me.

I would therefore translate homesteading as hejmbienado, or perhaps hejmbienumo.

Mi hejmbienis en Kentucky illustrates a more verbal form.

homesteading = mastrumado

I think that those are different things.

While sometimes informally used to refer to someones house, "homestead" really refers to a kind of farm - generally small - that the farmer lives on; a farmhouse, barn, shed, acreage, etc. A family farm, rather than corporate "agribusiness".

Mastrumado just means "housekeeping" or "management".

Are you quite sure of that?

"mastrumado = administro de la hejma vivo, inkluzive de la purigado, nutrado, aĉetado kaj vendado"

Right, Homesteading has to do with the idea of self-sufficiency.
Thanks, perhaps there will be some other suggestions.

According to the Wells dictionary:

homestead = farmodomo

But, for 'homesteading' as described in Wikipedia, maybe you could say 'hejma kultivado'?

I think you need to be more precise as to what exactly you mean by 'homesteading'. It can refer to 'life as a settler on a homestead', or it can refer to something as described in the Wikipedia article, which relates to the idea of anyone trying to grow more fruit and veg in the garden, or even on a balcony if you live in a flat (urban homesteading!).

Homestead in the sense of a plot of land for farming would be 'farmbieno'.

Perhaps you have heard about Scott Nearing's "Living the Good Life". There he describes his homesteady life. This is what I am looking for.
