"One drawback with the notion of Esperanto becoming this universal thing is that it would lose something it now has: the sense that if you are speaking Esperanto, almost by definition you are speaking to a friend."

Do you think "malservaĵo" works for "drawback"?
"ĝi perdus ion, kio ĝi nun havas" - Is that right?

The meaning of malservaĵo is not quite clear. I think malbona servo or perhaps even misservo could be used, but normally drawback = malavantaĝo.

Your translation isn't bad. I would drop the "ad" and say "universaliĝo de Esperanto": Unu malavantaĝo en la ideo de universaliĝo de Esperanto... But why do you need to say "the notion of"? Unu malavantaĝo en la universaliĝo de Esperanto... seems fine to me.
