sudanglo:1. How to render the verbal ideas of 'used to' and 'would' to describe someone's habits in the past and for which, unlike many European languages, Esperanto has no specific form for.

It is not necessary to stick in a kutime/ĝenerale/plej ofte for every instance, but I think you need to set the scene.
Yes that's something I gave some thought to. But I concluded that since the whole things concerns "How did she spend her days?", it's clear enough from the context that we're talking about what she did day to day, rather than on one specific occasion. So we know that "matene" really means "ĉiun matenon", "ŝi ellitiĝis" means "ĉiun matenon ŝi ellitiĝis", etc.

It seems to me that '-adis' is rather an emphatic form used when one wishes to stress duration or repetition. So I'm not sure that it is appropriate here to give the idea of the French imparfait.

For example, if I say mi portadis al ŝi kafon, kiun ŝi trinkadis fumante aŭ legante this conjures a picture of someone with a wooden leg or other mobility impediment painfully delivering the coffee which was lingered over, or frequently running back and forth between the kitchen and the bedroom for a caffeine addict.

Congratulations to everybody who had a go at translating the first text. This seems to have been a truly international effort with many contributors who don't apparently have English as their first language taking part. Well done everybody.

I think it's time now to move on to a more challenging text (see next post) which I hope won't deter the non-native speakers of English from participating in the competition. Again I have chosen an author who tends to avoid florid description.

It happened this way. Father Quixote had ordered his solitary lunch from his housekeeper and set off to buy wine at a local cooperative eight kilometres away on the main road to Valencia. It was a day when the heat stood and quivered over the dry fields and there was no air-conditioning in his little Seat 600 which he had bought, already second-hand, eight years before.

As he drove he thought sadly of the day when he would have to find a new car. A dog's years can be multiplied by seven to equal a man's, and by that calculation his car would still be in early middle age, but he noticed how already his parishioners began to regard his Seat as almost senile.

(Seat is a make of car sold in Spain and 600 refers to the model)

Here's my attempt for the second text :

Tiamaniere okazas. Post kiam Pastro Quixote postulis sian solecan tagmanĝon al sia mastrumistino, li foriris aĉeti vinon en lokumita kooperativo je ok kilometroj laŭ la ĉefa vojo al Valencio. Estis iu tago dum kiu la varmo leviĝis kaj tremis super la sekaj kampoj kaj ne estis klimatizilo en lia eta Seat 600, kiun li aĉetis, kiam ĝi estis jam dufoje akirita, antaŭ ok jaroj.
Dum li stiris, li malgaje pensis pri la tago, kiam li devos trovi novan aŭton. Eblas sepobligi la jaroj de la hunda aĝo por similigi ĝin je la homa aĝo kaj, laŭ ĉi tiu kalkulo, lia aŭto ankoraŭ estus komencante mezaĝa sed li rimarkis, kiel la paroĥanoj komencis konsideri lian Seat kvazaŭ preskaŭ senila.

Boy, this one was tough. I'm not happy with almost any of my attempt, but I'm eager to see what the more experienced Esperantists come out with.

Okazas tiel. Patro Quixote mendis sian solan tagmanĝon al sia mastrumistino, kaj li ekiris aĉeti vinon ĉe loka kooperativo kiu estas ok da kilometroj per la ĉefvojo al Valencio. Estas la speco de tago dum kia la varmego restis treme super la sekaj kampoj, kaj li ne havis klimatizadon en sian etan Seat 600, kiu li aĉetis brokante antaŭ ok jaroj.

Dum li veturigis, li pensis triste pri la tiam, kiam li devus trovi novan aŭton. La jaroj de hundo multiĝeblas je sep al rilatas la jarojn de viro, kaj per tiu kalkulo, lia aŭto ankoraŭ aĝas meze, sed li rimarkis, kiel liaj paroĥanoj jam rigardas sian Seat kiel preskaŭ maljuna.

Estis tago de varmego restema kaj skuetiĝanta super la sekaj kampoj kaj mankis aermalvarmigilo en lia eta Seat 600, kiun li aĉetis, brokante eĉ tiam, antaŭ ok jaroj.

Stirante, li malgaje pripensis la tagon, kiam li devos trovi novan aŭton. Hundaj jaroj sepobligeblas por egali virajn, kaj laŭ tia kalkulado lia aŭto ankoraŭ estus en la frumezaj jaroj sed li jam rimarkis, kiel sian paroĥanaron jam taksis lian Seat perdonta la saĝon.

Sorry folks. It was a typo (now corrected) and the text should have begun with It happened this way.

Remember that the aim of the game is not to slavishly reflect the style and content of the original, but to produce a literary text which reads well in Esperanto. Don't hesitate to make it clearer than the original where you see fit adding in explanatory detail, or to restructure the sentences, or to use different metaphors.
