HB sometimes the subclause tense usage is relative to the main verb, sometimes not. PAG goes into this in some detail - section 269 and following sections.
With verbs of perception + ke it is usually relative. If Eldanar's intended meaning was that there was no observer to see that nothing existed then - estis neniu por vidi ke nenio ekzistas.
PAG gives the paradigm:
Mi vidis ke li falas (tiam)
Ni vidis ke li falis (antaŭe)
Mi vidis ke li falos (poste)
The translation into English of the Ekzercaro sentence "La pli maljuna estis tiel simila al la patrino per sia karaktero kaj vizaĝo, ke ĉiu, kiu ŝin vidis, povis pensi, ke li vidas la patrinon" would be
The older one was so similar to her mother in her character and looks, that everyone who saw her, might think that they were looking at the mother

Mi ne aŭdis ke vi telefonas min.I not too sure what this means. Would you say in English I didn't hear that you were phoning me?
More natural to say Mi ne aŭdis kiam vi telefonis or Mi ne aŭdis la telefonon sonori for I didn't hear the phone go.
