I've seen the term "birdsong" written as "birdokanto" before, but wouldn't it really be "birdakanto" or just plain "birdkanto"?

The insertion of the 'o' assists pronunciation. You might say bird-kanto, but I guess most would prefer birdo-kanto.
Birda kanto would be normally be written thus, as two words and could mean a birdlike song - not necessarily bird song.
