When discussing a particular piece of furniture I was handing on, I wrote to the receiver, "May it bring you similar pleasure." In mind I rendered it, "Ke ĝi alportu similan ĝojon al vi." Is that correctly rendered? The subjunctive uses of -u and when to render the English "it" still leave me bemused.

Thanks to all! ridulo.gif

When the 'it' stands for a particular concrete thing, then it is rendered as ĝi.

So in the case you describe ĝi alportu similan ĝojon al vi is fine. You don't have to use the 'ke', though you would in a longer form like Mi deziras, ke ...

Somewhat unrelated comment, mentally translating random things from your life, street signs, whatever, is an excellent way to practice Esperanto in the absence of other speakers.

Thank you, Sudanglo. Does using the unrequired "ke" add to the idea of "may?" It ("que") does in Spanish, for example.

It's also just flat fun. I was working on "whirligig" the other day. You can't imagine all the things I came up with. okulumo.gif

Ke in Esperanto means "that", used as a conjuction. Thus "I hope that it may bring you similar pleasure" could be Mi esperas, ke ĝi alportu similan ĝojon al vi.
