On a related note: what is the word for vampire? Perhaps 'sangotrinka vivkadavro'?

According to the CEED, it is "vampiro". But your version certainly is more evocative.

KSG:I can't find one in the dictionary on the right, in this site's search box, on Google searching this site for "zombie," or on Google searching any site for "zombie in Esperanto" or "zombie en Esperanto".

Does anyone know of such a word? Is there a straightforward way to make one that people will understand? I really don't feel that a language is complete and can be applied to all parts of life if it doesn't have the necessary words with which to discuss a zombie apocalypse.
How about 'marŝmortulo'? Zombies are often referred to as the walking dead.

zombio (edit: d'oh, i already posted this, and afterwards i noticed the question had already been answered)

Is there a single word that can be formed in Esperanto which captures the idea of the word 'undead' ('something dead that behaves as if it were alive' or 'something once alive that continues to display signs of life after their death'), or would you have to use multiple words?

I'm not aware of any "standard" such word or expression. Some possible ideas:
vivmorta
postviva
preterviva
or even simply morta if the context makes clear that the dead thing is still active.

What about malmorta?

It seems to me that you need to decide on what aspect of these fictional creatures is most important and then try to encapsulate that in a word. For example if it is their being trapped halfway between this life and the next, then possibilities might be duonvivantoj, (or conversely duonmortintoj), duonuloj, or interuloj. If it is simply being not-dead then nemortuloj is one possibility.

For vampires, if it is their appetite for blood than sangsuĉantoj, sangmanĝantoj, or sangsklavoj may be possibilities. If it is hating the light then lumevitantoj.

ktp ..

You could always choose a ridiculously long contructed word...

malvivamucidacerbomanĝistohomo

Or, contracted:

malvivmucidcerbmanĝisthomo.

Direct translation:
nonlivingmoldybraineaterhuman.

Or according to traduku.net:
non a lival musty brain an eatist human being.

Alternatively, there's always 'aĥ mia dio rigardu tie!' or 'mi jam ne devas iri al la tualeto...'.

EDIT: I may be inadvertadly a bad influence on learners considering my compound words aren't perfect yet, so don't take my methods to heart lango.gif
