Originalulo kontraux strangetulo

Just wanted to hear thoughts on this one: Which would you prefer to use in Esperanto, originalulo aux strangetulo, when describing a friend of yours (or yourself) that is friendly, but a little strange? In other words, how would you prefer to translate the word "eccentric"? Is there a another option you would prefer to use? I'm looking forward to your comments.

"originalo" means "a source" according to lernu's dictionary.

My English dictionary says "stranga = eccentric", exactly.

So I would use "strangetulo", yeah. Nowhere in the English meaning of "eccentric" in the dictionary does it actually mean "friendly", so...

If I wanted to emphasize that the person doesn't really follow social norms, I could say
  • malkutimulo
  • mallaŭsociemulo
  • mallaŭmoremulo
  • siamanierulo
  • ulo, kiu prifajfas morojn
  • ulo, kiu malatentas aliulajn emojn
If they just let their quirkiness show through I might call them nesinordinarigema.

If I wanted to emphasize that they're friendly if you get to know them, but they're also the kind of person that doesn't actively build up friendships, I'd describe them as ne aktive amikigema, sed amikigebla.

Look at the PIV definition of ekstravaganca - kontraŭa al la komuna saĝo, sensence stranga. So perhaps ekstravangaculo for an eccentric.

Ekscentra seems to be an international word and one of the PIV definitions is ekstravaganca. So ekscentrulo is also a possibility.

Thanks to all of you for your post! As far as being "friendly", I was trying to emphasize that eccentrics are not dangerous. Some are, but we have other words for folks like that, namely "deranged". Maybe "harmless" would have been a better word to help describe the strange person that doesn't follow some or many social norms for whatever reason. In any case, I'm grateful to all of you for helping to expand the Esperanto community's vocabulary. Vere, tia strangetulo/malkutimulo/

Laux cxi tiu sveda-esperantra vortaro Ordbok Svenska-EsperantoDin oni trovas:

izol(iĝ)emulo, originalulo, apartiĝemulo (por la sveda "särling" )
originalulo (por la sveda vorto "original", kiam temas pri persono)

Se oni prisercxas adjektivojn oni trovas:

stranga, originala (sveda "egen, säregen" )
stranga, kurioza (sveda "säregen, egendomlig" )
originalulo (sveda "originell" )
strangulo (sveda "underlig" )

According to the Swedish dictionary mentioned above you find these words:
izol(iĝ)emulo, originalulo, apartiĝemulo (for the Swedish "särling" )
originalulo (for the Swedish word "original", when speaking about a person)

For adjectives:
stranga, originala (swedish "egen, säregen" )
stranga, kurioza (Swedish "säregen, egendomlig" )
originalulo (Swedish "originell" )
strangulo (Swedish "underlig" )

Kurioza also seems to be "sällsam". As my cousin says, "that's like the kind of 'strange' that a mother would use to describe her serial-killer son" (English meanings: funny-peculiar, unique...)

So maybe that's really the best one for "eccentric"... : PP

Ekscentra isn't in my Esperanto-Icelandic dictionary, same for one of my English ones, so I'm not sure about how good it is to use... (Root words: "from ek ‘out of’ + kentron ‘centre", hmm! We could then write "Outside of normal" in EO? : P)

Ekscentra isn't in my Esperanto-Icelandic dictionary, same for one of my English ones, so I'm not sure about how good it is to use... (Root words: "from ek ‘out of’ + kentron ‘centre", hmm! We could then write "Outside of normal" in EO? : P)
"Ekscentra" seems to me like "eks-centra"; "formerly central". I have seen "ekstercentrulo" used in this sense, and it is a literal translation of the Latin meaning of "eccentric". Of course, being a literal translation from Latin doesn't necessarily mean it should be used in Esperanto, this is just my personal observation. Maybe "eksternormala" would convey the desired idea...

I am that kind of weird-but-not-dangerous person; I generally describe myself as "frenezeta"; except when I'm feeling dramatic (which is fairly often) and descibe myself as "frenezega".
