However, Altebrilas's post suggests another possibility - kretenigi.

By the way, what has happened to 'ifi'. Wasn't that in an earlier version of PIV for use when -ig -um or -iz don't quite hit the mark.

Definitely kretenigo as -ig- is the most widely understood and undebated suffix.

What is "ifi" ?? Does this have something to do with the English -ify or Italian -ificare?

I don't see why we normally need anything other than -ig. -iz might be helpful in technical contexts, sure. But -ifi? What does it do that's substantially different? This sounds like another Ido-esque suffix with no real additional value ...

I'm not sure I've ever encountered "ifi" prior to your use of it in this thread. Then again, I'm not as well-read as most.

ifi AFAIK is "fari ion -o", while igi is "fari ion -a" and izi "provizi ion per -o", but it never came into use, maybe it's from Ido?

My thanks for all the suggestions. Personally I might favour Richard Hall's trofaciligi or Rolnik's trosimpligi for what is happening. One suggestion for its use might be Ekde kiam mi estis lernejano, oni trofaciligis la antaŭuniversitatan/abiturientan matematikan instruprogamon.
