leonarde:How does "malpakiĝi" (to become unpacked) work?
Perhaps as in "la donaco malpakiĝis de la infano".
I would use "elpakiĝis", though.
Do these suggested terms seem more or less accurage than "entendiĝi"?
("entendiĝi" means "to get into a tent").

I wouldn't say that "malpakiĝi" has the same meaning as "etendiĝi", so I can't exactly find more or less accuracy. They seem just different to me.

My dictionary suggests "flirti" to be used with flags ("flago flirtas ĉe la balkono"). It also mentions the verb "malferli", although it seems to refer to sails only.

What we need is a member of the Esperanto Sailing Community. Or an Esperantist who is heavily into flags.

I like the sound of 'malferli'.
Strangely, my Consise Oxford Dictionary doesn't mention flags in the definition of 'unfurl', so maybe malferli is what I was after. We'll have to ask for it to be put into the Lernu dictionary. Clearly, it is an important and useful word. okulumo.gif

According to me, who else?, translation is not about the corrugated squiggles of each word. Grab the whole darn thing. Get a picture of it in your mind. See the patriots wave their flag! See reason get tromped into the mire!

Then something like this:

Kiam flago flirtigigxas, klariono (t)rompas racion.

Klariono, bugle because I imagined a militant situation. Flirti, because that is what flags do. Flirtigi flagon in Butler's means "wave the flag". My queer coupling of ig and igx is because someone causes (ig)the flag to be (igx) waved. Some doubling up for poetic license, after all a proverb has to be short. OK, then

Kiam oni flirtigas flagon, klariono rompas racion.

Trompi would go better with trompeto, cxu ne?

Why not Kiam oni flirtigas flagon, klariono nuligas racion.

billpatt1942:Why not Kiam oni flirtigas flagon, klariono nuligas racion.
Because "Kiam oni flirtigas flagon, rezono enfermigxas per klariono." is better yet. According to me, whistling into the wind.

Enfermi means to pen up, as pigs in a sty.

That's good -- I like that.
