Ride la flegistino demandis.
Ridante la flegistino demandis. = Dum sxi demandis, sxi ridis. = Sxi demandis kaj ridis samtempe.

Ride la flegistino demandis. = Je rida maniero sxi demandis. = Kun rido sxi demandis.

There may not be so much difference between demandi ride and demandi ridante, but with other lexical qualifiers the difference may be more apparent.

Rapidante ŝi ekstumblis kaj falis - tells you how she came to trip up and fall, doesn't tell you how quickly she fell.

Ŝi falis rapide en la kuniklo-truo (Alice falling down the rabbit hole).
