I have been working on translating the names of the first 151 Pokemon into Esperanto. I have used the Japanese name origin given (in English) on Bulbapedia, in order to make the translations, and I was wondering if anybody could look over them, and help me.

I usually tried to translate and make the name as close in meaning to the Japanese origin given, except in cases where the original name is used in most/all other languages (in which I only Esperantized the name). All the names with stars are the ones I'm least certain about (although I'm uncertain about all of them in general.)

All suggestions and advice will be appreciated.

The list I made (with links to the Japanese origin [in English]): http://eo.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikipediisto:Amika_Ba...

For those interested, I have put up the more-or-less final list here: http://tks-zone.co.nr/pokesp.html.

Any plans to translate the other generations? I've been wanting to make a patch with an Esperanto translation if I ever learn how to do it.

@Zafur: Yes, I hope to have the other three generations done by the end of the year. I don't know how realistic my goal is though.

I'd be interested to hear more about your patch when details become available.

I'm not sure how realistic mine is either. I'm practicing on an Advanced Generation ROM for now since I'll have to take up scripting to fool with DS games. Plus I'll have to learn how to edit the screens where you input characters for names to include Esperanto characters. Not sure how useful this would be besides to practice with since I can't read Japanese and won't be able to translate new games before the English version.

Should I translate names like Oak when (if?) I finally do the translation?

Yes, you should, since the German version translates them too (I don't know about other language versions). Note however that the German version has absolutely new names that are sometimes taken from English, sometimes translated (more or less), sometimes completely newly created.

Personally, I'd just do translations like that from the Japanese names, adding an o if it ends with -n, otherwise replacing the original end vowel with -o (maybe keeping it if there's an ambiguity). Thus "fuŝigidano", "pikaĉo" etc. But that's left to personal taste okulumo.gif

I know in Spanish that they kept Pokémon names the same, but German and French are different. I had no clue if they changed the character names though.

Just wondering, how many people would actually be interested in a patch if I make one?

I believe the French know Professor Oak as Professeur Chen, and the German as Professor Eich. Perhaps in Esperanto his name could be Profesoro Kverk.

I would be interested. I would imagine that it would be a good way to practice Esperanto.
