How would you put into Esperanto:

"Life is a need-to-know operation."

tommjames (عرض الملف الشخصي) 26 فبراير، 2009 11:47:59 ص

My attempt: La vivo estas sci-bezona operacio.

Tre bone! I think that will be hard to beat.

How about: La vivo estas operacio scienda.

By the way, does the word la need to be here? In English one doesn't use it, and it seems a little illogical to me.

jchthys:Aŭ: La vivo estas operacio scienda.
When linking the adjective scienda to operacio, the result of this is to say that one should know the operation. However I think the sense of "need-to-know operation" is that life is an operation within which one needs to know about other things, generally. I don't think it's saying that one should know the operation itself.
Parenteze, ĉu la vorto "la" devas aperi ĉi tie? Angle oni ne uzas ĝin;
When using the word vivo there is a distinction to be made between "a life", and life in general. Vivo by itself would I beleive be most commonly interpreted as "a life", and so we use "la" to refer to life as a category of thing rather than an instance.

Please provide an English translation with Esperanto texts.

'Need-to-know-operation' is an expression from fields like espionage, in which secret agents are only given information that they need to know in order to carry out their mission.

Seems like I misinterpreted the meaning too rideto.gif

In this case I might change my original sci-bezona to something like sci-laŭ-bezona to show that one only receives knowledge according to need.

Sorry, I must have thought this was one of the Esperanto forums. I translated by message.

I didn't know that. I wouldn't know how to translate that.

tommjames: I might change my original sci-bezona to something like sci-laŭ-bezona ..
scivolema means inquisitive, so that scivolo is the wish to know, so by analogy scibezono is the need to know. That's why I thought that scibezona was a very neat solution. We wouldn't want the translation to get too long anyway; that's the real difficulty.
