How to talk about possession?

It's a simple question, but the only thing I can't really find(thus far). To say something is hers, I could say Sxia. But what if I want to say it's 'that woman's' or 'Mia's' or something to that effect?

You can use de, e.g. "it's that woman's" = gxi estas de tiu virino.

And sometimes you might need a pronoun, e.g. "I like that woman's (things)" = mi sxatas ilin de tiu virino.

It's a shame that Esperanto doesn't have a genitive form for nouns like English does.

I wouldn't understand that. It's better to say mi ŝatas la aĵojn de tiu virino.

I don't see what's wrong with "sxia". Context will usually make it clear who "sxia" refers to. A more specific example would make the problem you're having more clear.

If you want to avoid sxia, then rogir's solution is perfectly correct.

I think we are talking mainly about cases when "ŝia" doesn't work. Like, if there are many women in a room, and only Mary has a cat, so we want to say that the cat is Mary's. We can't say "ŝia" because it isn't specific enough. So we say instead "la kato estas de Mary"

I wouldn't understand that. It's better to say mi ŝatas la aĵojn de tiu virino.
How about "mi ŝatas tiujn de tiu virino"?

I am glad that many languages dropped genitive, totally superfluous. The trend from antique language forms during centuries is that cases disappear. Bedaŭrinde tro malrapide.
See chinese, more than 3000 years old, italian and spanish through latin.

Mi ŝatas la posedaĵojn de tiu virino.

I think I read somewhere that if you're going to use a possessive "de"-phrase you have to have "la." (So I don't think just "ilin" or "tiujn" would be correct.)

What about: "ĝi apartenas al tiu virino" or
"Ĝi apartenas al mi." ?
That's what I would go with if that was all you wanted the sentence to say. "Ĝi estas de tiu virino" is also correct but I prefer the ones with "apartenas" for some reason.

Possessive form of the demonstrative pronoun.

Tiu ----- ties = that one´s
Tiu ĉi -- ĉi ties = this one´s

Mi iris al TIES domo
I went to that one´s house

ĈI TIES filoj estas junaj
This person´s sons are young.
