I was trying to translate "Thylacine" (Tasmanian Tiger, see current profile picture) into the Lernu dictionary but hit a snag - how does one say (correctly) that something appears (or looks) like something else?

"aperi"'s definition EO-EO is "ekvidiĝi" (to start to become looked at) and "ekesti" (to start to be), and "ŝajni" seems better suited for "it appears true/false".

The definition so far: Karnovora marsupiulo kiu estas kiel hundo kiu havas tigrajn striojn (Thylacinus cynocephalus) (formortinta)

The problem with "estas kiel hundo" is that Thylacines aren't really dogs, and some non-visual characteristics are extremely undoglike (like having a pouch, which can't be seen normally, being more related to the kangaroo than a wolf, and having peculiar behaviours like hopping like a kangaroo (believed to make up for the lack of decent running capability)).

EDIT: Current definition:
Karnovora marsupiulo kiu aspektas kiel hundo kiu havas tigrajn striojn (Thylacinus cynocephalus) (formortinta)

What about "simili" - to resemble
Would that work as well?

Yes it would.

Thanks angel32163 for the suggestion! ridulo.gif

Would this hint at them being similar in more than just visual ways though? This is what I'm primarily trying to avoid, to try and make a very short yet accurate definition.

Indeed.

In that case I'd prefer "aspekti kiel"
