unuiĝinta = something that has become one
Unuiĝi is not transitive, so you cannot say that 'iu unuiĝis ion'... so no pasive (io estas unuiĝita de iu) is possible either.
The alternative is to say 'unuigita', but that implies that somebody united them (or forced them to unite). So Unuigitaj Ŝtatoj implies the idea that they didn't unite by themselves.
Unuiĝinta, on the other side, means that they have united by themselves.
That's the reason.

IvoG:when you have to say where are you from - what's the correct preposition to use? "de" or "el"? or maybe they are both correct?I see it as "el" emphasizing that you're physically from the place, and "de" is a bit more ambiguous. El should suffice in all occasions though from what I can assume.

As for "unuiĝinta", there's reasons why "unuiĝita" doesn't make sense, but other than that, if it wasn't for "iĝi", another great reason is that countries like to think of themselves as unifying together by themselves and not being united by some other bozos
.("Unuigitaj ŝtatoj de Nord-Ameriko" sounds like the civil war ended really badly and the brits came back, turned it back into a colony and unified all the North and South states into a single colony (could be fun for some steam-punk authors)

you'll however find a lot of esperantists who will claim that one of them is wrong. so if you want to workaround the issue you can say: kiel vi nomighas?

btw i was listening to a song and i came across the word "plejagxulino" - that's like an "eldest (daughter)", right?
