It is strange, but ReVo does not give translation for word 'can'. But this is the main meaning of 'povi'! It translates only 4th meaning of 'povo' (mathematical notion),
as 'power'.
Do you think 'povo' always is translated 'power'?
Let's look Oxford dictionary for 'power'.
1. ability to do or act == 'povo'.
2. (pl) faculty of the body or mind == 'povoj'
3. strength, force == 'forto'
4. energy or force that can be uzed to do work == 'povo' (mesure:W), 'forto' (N), 'kurento' (A)
5. right, control, autority == 'potenco'
etc.

By coincidence, I just had a letter from an experienced British E-ist who said that 'power' in the sense of electric power or authority is better translated potenco , whereas povo or kapablo relate to the ability to do something. Thus 'electric power' is elektra potenco , but 'I can do it' is Mi povas (or kapablas) fari tion.

Incidentally, this would make monks feel quite awkward okulumo.gif (monaĥoj)

billpatt1942:okulumo.gif okulumo.gif Perhaps the "an" in analfabeteco is a prefix, but the prefix is Greek meaning lack of or non-existence of something. Compare the chemical words anion and cation.
Actually, the "an-" in "anion" comes from the Greek prefix "ana-", etymologically meaning "up". In front of a vowel, both "a-" and "ana-" become "an-".
Hope this is helpful. I don't mean to be pedantic, but I am anyway okulumo.gif
